I got a job! At a restaurant. What to expect?!

I am a busboy and it can be very overwhelming at first and you may feel like it isn't worth the pay; plus your probably on training pay so it is even worse. Once you get the hang of it and know where things are, what to do etc, you will like it. Plus you get tips so you can make a lot of money if your the only busser or if you just work your ass off for the servers. Try to go out of your way to help out. If it is slow, dont sit around and talk. If i was a manager I would hate that. I wish I could sit down but at the same time i like to stay busy so my managers/co-workers aren't unhappy. If shit is slow, fill the ice up, sweep the kitchen, sweep ciggerette butts outside, refill anything that needs too, ask the dishwasher if he needs help, run food for servers, pre-bus tables, ask to take food from servers going back to the dish room, and empty shit off plate, refill drinks, refill chips salsa, haha i could go on. Ask the servers and managers if they need any help with anything, and if you feel like you aren't busy enough at times and find yourself standing around, ask your co workers what are good things to do when it is slow, and they will like that. this is kina a high rambling wall of texts

Advise: work hard and make people, especially your boss, notice you. When I started working, I worked hard, got a lot of shifts, and at my performance evaluation about 4 months into it I was asked when I would be 18 so I could be eligible for a promotion because they wanted me doing other things. And I was at the bottom half of the seniority list for my position at the time.

Also befriend your boss. My boss is kinda chill, I walked in there in ski pants at the beginning of November to get some things on my way home. My boss noticed, I had a log conversation about it with him next time I worked, turns out he is a somewhat avid snowboarder. He makes the schedule and ended up making sure that I got every saturday off during the season so that I could ski

I work as a chef in a large hostel kithen now but my job before i started out in a bit of a busboy situation but started helping out with dishes. From this i eventually ended up doing starters, sides and desserts so follow the advice in the thread so far but if the place isnt too big or they end up needing more staff in the kitchen make yourself promotable. Working in the kitchen is so much better. Yeah it can be hard work when its busy but you get repsected more paid more and you dont have deal with the customers who 50% are idiots

psssssh... Some people make it super serial, but it's not that bad. It's people, and people generally suck but waiting tables taught me how to deal with total fucking douchebags with a smile and work through anything without batting an eye, which is a serious life skill.

You will meet a lot of girls. Try not to have sex with the dramalicious ones. The busser position is a great vantage point to see how the restaurant works, so pay attention and you can be slaying the server position in no time. You'll know who's who and what's what before you start the heavy interaction shit and that's a huge advantage.

Sure the pay sucks now but you can pick up sidework for $$$$$$... Roll five girls' silverware @ around $5 apiece and your night just got a little better. Nobody wants to do their sidework. Ever.

PASUCKS is right too... Get to know your kitchen. Whether you want your food on time, a man dead or just some weed, they can make or break you and never, ever yell at a line cook or a dish washer. Ever.

If you stick with it you'll be a jaded, grizzled veteran in no time. You'll learn spanish, and the true value of a pen. Good luck.

Be really efficiant.

I'm a waitress and when theres not much to do the boss will ask if I've done something and I'm always like "yeah, all done for you :D" and then shit is good.

I actually enjoy being a waitress besides arsey customers, kitchen staff are horrendous though. I fucking love them, but my god, I cannot walk into the kitchen without the head chef making some remark about his cock or how he wants to have sex with me.

I find it kinda fun and the pay isnt that bad depending on what restaurant you work at. Some friday or sat. nights i walk out with 80 to 90 bucks for only like 4 to 5 hours of work. And yeah the kitchen is usually mad funny. Also if you ever need weed they usually have some or can get you some pretty quick.
