I didn’t bring a shovel to the bonezone

Jeff holce screamed at the top of his lungs at some newbie kids who walked up without shovels, they stopped for a moment and then literally turned around and went home. Nice inviting atmosphere you’re building over there jeff. Now those kids are never gonna want to come back and be afraid of the park community

can't blame him, Brighton pays him in wood chips and beer to go deal with elitist 20 something year olds that think they deserve a park handbuilt to their comp specs

Can someone explain to me why bringing a shovel to bonezons is such a big deal? I get it for other preseason spots where it might be just a few homies, like I’m definitely gonna bring a shovel for that and do some reshaping and stuff when needed. But I find it hard to believe that the 100+ MFs at bone zone on a Saturday are all using the shovel they brought. To me it seems like you could easily use it to “get in the door” and then not dig shit at all lol

gotta bring a shovel to "harvest the snow". whenever there is a group shovel, 90% of the people just stand by a feature with a shovel in their hands and dont do anything. It makes me giggle how butt hurt people get when you don't show up with a shovel.

The snowboarders at Brighton have been elitist towards skiers for 20 years, Brighton wouldn't even give skiers free tickets/passes until like 2013 (+/- a couple years)

homie just wants to yell at people, it has nothing to do with his compensation.

So toxic. I don't even really understand what everyone bringing shovels does. In the end everyone just kinda leaves without doing anything and its all icy and sucks for building anyway. Cool place though, respect to whoever builds there.

Lol, weird.

We ask people to bring shovels to Zero Zone events, but we've never turned anyone away for not bringing one.

Seems counter-productive to turn people away when we literally do all this to bring the community together haha.

Plus there's so many other ways to help, at every event there's always people shoveling, side slipping in runs, packing down lips, and dragging tarps of snow around- doesn't really matter if everyone has a shovel or not cause that isn't the only thing that needs to be done.

That being said, we do appreciate everyone who helps setup and tear down at events.

And as usual I'm also going to use this BoneZone thread to advertise Zero Zone, if you're in the Bozeman area and like DIY park skiing, give us a follow and pull up sometime- plus we won't scream at you for not bringing a shovel! Lmao.

I really hope someone uses this idea for their next intro for a bonezone vid.

Homie rolls up to the boys house. All the guys come out and load their shovels into the roof box. (10-20 shovels up in there).

Pull up to bonezone and unload the shovels.

Skiing starts. Really dumb idea, but I think it would be hilarious to use due to the shovel culture there.

You can be mad at Jeffs approach if you want, but isnt he a big part of why the bonezone exists as it does? I dont live in slc, but from my limited knowledge the bonezone started as a rouge operation in a different spot at brighton. It went on for a few years with people (mostly snowboarders) building rails out of wood, until it got too big and brighton decided to shut it down. But instead of just telling the people they cant do that, they offered an alternative space using the resort’s features.

Now that it's an official Brighton park, there needs to be some rules to ensure some level of safety. And to enforce those rules you need some line of communication from brighton to the people, in steps Jeff Holce. Imo Jeff took on this role because he is extremely passionate about the sport of snow sliding, and wants to foster a space for everyone to gather and enjoy it together. And for this to work, everyone needs to pitch in and do their part to maintain the space so that brighton can continue to allow it. It’s unfortunate that he yelled at some newbies that might not know better, but at the end of the day somebody needs to be the asshole to keep the place in good shape.

I visited the bonezone for the first time this weekend and can say it is sick af. To my knowledge, no other resort has something like the bonezone on an official level, and yall are extremely lucky to have a place like that to gather in the preseason. For example, Timberline regularly kicks us out of our main preseason zone, and they’ll throw away our rails if we leave them there over night. I would kill for tline to have a FREE public setup half the size of the bonezone.

So, can you show up to the bonezone with a shovel and no intention to use it? Yeah sure. Are you an asshole for that? Yeah probably. What you should actually do is appreciate that you have a space thats totally unique and fun, take pride it, and do your part to make it fun for everyone. The overall response in this thread is disappointing to see, and it makes me understand why the brighton snowboard community seems to always complain about the skier kids.

Sorry for the essay

Basically this, except the original Bonezone was in Guardsman Pass(down the road from Brighton) and the Forest Service and BCC Cops started threatening tickets for bringing trash(rails/features) on to public land and cutting down wood rails in summer of 2015. That preseason sucked because there was no where to ski without being hassled(imagine if preseason jibbing was like street). The original zone was built by snowboarders for snowboarders. To ride it, you had to bring a shovel and help dig. This is the origin of the bring a shovel policy. Pretty simple, makes sense.

After the original zone was shut down along with many other preseason spots in the pass, pro snowboarders Ted Borland and Alex Andrews took the initiative to go to Brighton Management, get industry sponsors and get two public zones going in summer of 2016. Along with friends(i.e. Jeff Holce), they spent the summer putting in work building features out of downed trees and clearing rocks. Everyone was welcome and you still had to help shovel if you wanted to ride. We filmed a lot for TC Episode 8.3 on these wood rails(thank you Bonezone crew). A year or two after, the zone was moved to it's current location on Milly with metal rails, boxes and park features from Brighton.

This preseason is the longest into any fall that the zone has ever been open(usually it closes early Nov). It's also the first time Brighton has made snow specifically to keep it going. They changed up the set up more this year than ever before and things can get frustrating when it gets crowded and people aren't doing their part to help. Jeff, Joey, and Makalu are the nicest dudes ever if you sit down and talk to them. They just want everyone to have a place to ride before the season gets underway.

Bring a shovel. Snowboarders are called out just the same. If you're riding at bone zone, you have to put in work. Skiing and snowboarding culture generally lacks the respect of OG's, Jeff is putting in work to make bone zone happen for YOU. In surfing, there's the lineup. And you have to respect the line up. This is essentially the same thing, and if you don't bring a shovel you lack respect for the culture. Plain and simple. This isn't a snowboard elitist mentality. If you're skiing rails, you should help fix them plain and simple. If you don't want to shovel, wait til the real park opens.

He probably said "where's a shovel" and "bring a shovel" not anything that much worse than that. Hopefully they got the message. Bring a shovel, Jeff makes bone zone happen for you. You should thank him instead of villlanizing him.

It's a respect thing. If you've never worked on a set up, just to have a bunch of kids show up and sesh and not help keep it legit, you should prob bring a shovel. That's where it comes from. Figure it out.

"tHe MeAn MaN yElLeD aT mE" All these Z kids are so soft, god forbid someone use their outside voice.

When I was young everyone got yelled at basically every day whether it was a supervisor at work, a teacher or a parent, didn't matter if we did something wrong or not. Just people being stressed out and trying to be heard above the din.

it is mad funny its still open at the moment when bbrighton is open and has a park. they must really need the overtime lmao

1. You should bring a shovel.

2. I did not bring a shovel the first couple times I went because I was clueless, but if I had gotten yelled at I would’ve just come back with a shovel. I’m not going to defend people yelling at dudes but it’s better than seething about it privately or passive aggressive social media posting about it.

3. Skiers all tend to session the same mailbox/tube feature and absolutely blow it out and then not fix it. The season I rode at Brighton I saw this happen a bunch of times it seemed like the snowboarders would just abandon this type of feature. Hopefully it’s different now.

4. cool shit takes EFFORT. One of the biggest problems I see in ski culture today is that people just roll up to the mtn and expect there to be a dope setup, and if it isn’t perfect they complain. People expect somebody else to build the park, organize the rail jam, build the FREE preseason setup, etc. Help build the culture and contribute to it, skiing is what we make it. If you don’t put in the effort the ski industry will decide things for you, and we all know that we aren’t the most valued demographic in the grand scheme of things. If everyone brings a shovel and helps at the bone zone it’s very easy to maintain.

5. if you are scared of the elitist snowboarders go to Alta

I get the bring a shovel thing but even if if you dont have one there's tons of people you can borrow one from. Also there's plenty of people who bring shovels with no plan on using them. For stuff like Bowly wverybody needs a shovel makes sense because there's so much transition and a lot cant be groomed with a cat. The bone zone is a few rails. A few guys with shovels and rakes could keep it decent.

I like the dig to ride element but it's not really necessary especially with the amount of people there.

it was me..... im the newb. my friends and i were so excited to get to go to the legendary Bone Zone. we just never got the message about the "bring a shovel" . our mom took the day off from work and we paid for the gas for her to drive there with the money we earned by doing yard work all summer....

we would have brought two shovels each, had we known there was such cut throat ice coast Rules.

are mom was really mad at us for wasting her day, she ended up losing her job for not bringing printer paper into the office ...

my ego just needs to reflex on the fact that I,

snowboard better than this Jeff clown,

and ski better, than ANYONE that skis the tubes at the "bone zone",

this includes lil willy wesson.

thats all for today.
