Hyper extended my knee. Need advice

Yo guys I hyper extended my knee this morning before work & when I straighten my knee I feel something's not right. It's not bad and I can still walk but with a limp cause if it bends to far I get a pain only in the front. Got any tips or advice to let this baby naturally heal before I decide to go see a doctor, Currently icing it but don't know of any legit exercises to help re strengthen it. I know a bunch of you have knee problems from skiing & this is unfortunately my first. Hmu in the comments would greatly appreciate it

Do you have swelling or stiffness? Does it feel like something is stopping motion? Do you have full ROM?

Its important to keep swelling down and maintain ROM through extension and flexion (straightening and bending). Also if swelling is a problem a compression sleeve over the joint could help with that.

RICE rest ice compression elevation

If it's not getting noticeably better in a couple days hit the doctor. Any medical insurance?

Might as well go see a doctor as soon as you can - hyperextension can cause ligament damage (ACL, MCL, those real important ones), and I'm sure most people here will tell you that you want to find that out quick and avoid increasing the problem in any way.

If it helps, my mate got a grade 2 ACL from tripping down the bottom two stairs in his house...

Thanks guys, gonna wait & continue icing it this weekend then follow up with the doctor. Appreciate the tips hopefully it all works out.

I feel for ya man. Whenever I screw my knee up, it becomes a horrible mental debate of "is this bad enough to warrant visiting the doctor"? I've had two relatively bad sprains that hurt for over a month pretty good. I got MRI's and it came back clean. This happened twice in 3 years. Now I'm scared to go to the doc if my knee is fucked because I feel like I'll be pissing away money unless I for sure have a blown ligament. Isn't it great to be an American?

Truth. It costs the same $30 for me to visit the GP, but I have to pay $1600 a month worth of insurance premiums for a family of four just to have that privilege.

Finally have full motion but still the odd quick pain. Hopefully I'm good for the upcoming season.

Those knees are nothing to mess around with. I hope you are putting in some strengthening work. A few miles a week on the bike would work wonders
