HV30 or d40?

So I have a job finally, and some money to spend, and I'm completely torn whether I want a DSLR or a new video camera. Currently my video camera is barely working and it's some JVC pieceofshit. For still photography I either steal my friends D40 or just use a shitty point and shoot type thing.

I am taking a media arts class next year where we will be using HV30's and FCP so I'll be able to get a lot more familiar with it, and I wanna make some biking edits this summer, and skiing edits next winter (we filmed a ton two seasons ago, and basically none last season).

In college I might be going for a graphic design major, and if I wanna do anything like that, I figure I would basically need a decent still cam.

Any other imputs/suggestions to help sway me? I'm leaning towards getting the DSLR and if I make decent money get the HV30 later in the year.

i was in the same boat sorta about year ago, but i bought a panasonic cam about 8 months ago, and now i wana get a d40x i know people talk down the d40 in just starting out dslr, ive had slrs before but just getting into digital now, maybe go with the d90 if you cn save up a little more money, nice dslr and it shoots in hd (even though that word is thrown around so much these days)

If you can't spring the money for the D90, look into the D5000 if you can get it for a decent price. I went with it and it shoots video as well. A little soft but still works great! It also takes some good pics. It came with the kit lens and then I bought a 55-200mm lens as well to go with the camera.
