HS Seniors of NS

Been noticing lately that a lot of NS'ers (like a disproportionately large amount) seem to be HS seniors and off to college next (this) year.

It's the last day for RD applications for most schools, so this thread is for those attending freshman year of college in the upcoming school year.

Where you want 2 go?

Where u b accepted?

Whatchu want 2 major in?

etc

I got accepted to Purdue University for mechanical engineering technology about a week and a half ago and I'm in the process of enrolling now. I'm thinking about minoring in building construction management. Also if anyone else (small chance) is going there and might want a roommate, PM me

Got in to MSU. Applied to USU and WSCU a few weeks ago and haven't heard back since it was by mail and the mail here in Pocatello is messed up rn. I'm positive that I got in to both places tho. I'll also apply to ISU and will probably go there my first 2 years to save money then go elsewhere to get out and see more of the world haha. I'm not sure what I'll major in but biology is definitely something I'm looking at. Want to do something in healthcare...just not sure what...

Ive only applied to u of washington so far... Prolly wont get in. Applying to cu boulder, CSU fort collins, U of Denver, U of Oregon, Lewis and Clark, U of Vermont, and u of m duluth by jan 15. Might also apply to UBC in Vancouver but they only look an your senior yr grades which will forsure be hella weak so idk. I have a 2.9 gpa so really counting on rigorous course schedule 29 on act and good essay and extracurriculars.

I've always wanted to go to michigan state and expected to get in no problem with a 31 on the act and a 3.25 with a lot of AP classes. they waitlisted me and now i have to send them my grades for this semester then they'll decide. i also didn't apply anywhere else (fuck lol). hopefully it'll work out since I'm doing well right now.

Applied to:

-RPI

-Binghamton U

-Boston U

-Northeastern

-Hopkins

-Notre Dame

-UPENN

-Cornell

Already know that I'm into Bing and Northeastern. Pretty confident I'll get into the other schools as well. Not sure where I want to go honestly at this point.

Im doing BU (both parents went there) and Cornell as well. Heard UPenn was particularly hard this year at least for ED

BU is up there for me. Not crazy far away, and I absolutely love Boston. Visited my friends there at BU and BC last semester, got me even more hyped. Honestly where I go will end up being based on money unfortunately.

Yeah I love Boston too, prefer BC over BU atm but applying to both. Hopefully I get some scholarship $$ from BU

Yea im hoping too. Didn't apply to BC due to the lack of an engineering program.

they didnt use any terminology in the letter. they just said they need my grades before they decide. i think i can still get in for the fall semester of 2016.

Sounds like deferred. Waitlisted means you didn't get in regular decision but they didn't reject you either nd its hard to get in after that.

Nah youre wrong about ubc. Ubc only looks at yr 12 for canadians, same with all other canadian schools. Its diff for us students (check 10/11th grades mostly i think)

gap year, work a lot then hopefully move to salt lake and go to community college while working a lot. havent applied anywhere yet :/

Fucking good idea actually. I might stay local though and ski all over the east coast but I actually like that idea

You're kind of all over the place with these schools, most of them are great, but Binghampton and Northeastern are pretty average to be honest. Never heard of RPI, too lazy to google the acronym so unsure about there. If you want to do business though, ND (if it's mendoza), UPenn (if it's wharton) and Cornell (if you get into the hotel school) are your best bets. I know a few guys from BU and BC that work on wall street as well, if that's of interest.

Not criticizing or questioning your school choices, just giving insight from someone who will be starting full time doing investment banking this summer, to give you perspective. good luck.

No worries man, thanks for the insight. As to why I'm all over the place, I honestly don't know what I want to do with my life at this point. My whole HS career I thought engineering was gonna be my thing. But I hit junior and senior year, and physics and AP physics just werent/aren't my thing. Still love math and calc and stat etc, and I'm taking AP econ this year, and Im super interested in that. So who knows at this point honestly.

And so you don't have to Google, RPI is a good engineering school in upstate NY. Only applied there bc I already have a scholarship there ahah

well if you like math, stats and end up liking econ, then something in business may be the route you want to take. All those classes line up very with Finance, Economics, Accounting, etc. If you really aren't certain of what you want to do, I would suggest UPenn or Cornell. An Ivy league education is respected no matter what the degree.

"kind of all over the place with these schools, most of them are great"

I don't know when you went to college, but these days it's not uncommon for people to apply to 10+ schools. Generally, it's suggested that one has safeties (schools you know you'll get into), targets (schools you should get into, but might not), and reaches (schools slightly above your stats academically, or those with super low acceptance rates.

Judging by what this kid wrote, I'm guessing Bing and Northeastern are his safeties, considering he said he knew he'd get in. No need to bash someone for having two top 60 schools as safeties, and probably getting scholarship $ at that.

Furthermore, these days, schools such as UPenn, ND, Cornell, etc. are crapshoots in terms of whether top students will get accepted. You apply to six in hopes of getting in to one. Gone are the days of being a double-legacy at ND, skimping HS work, and getting in based on daddies trust fund (for the most part) (and no offense to anyone who went/goes to ND, it's a great school.

If you had bothered to read the thread, you would have realized that this kid also doesn't want to do business, he's interested in engineering, which is why RPI (Renssalaer Polytechnic Institute) is an excellent option for him.

As I mentioned earlier, ivy admissions are a shit-show, and even more so for their business schools. Wharton, for example, is seen by many as the best business school in the nation. It's not like anyone is getting into UPenn, ND, Cornell, Harvard, and Yale's business schools, even if they were one of the most qualified applicants out there. Schools know what they want in a student, and not every school wants the same thing. Wharton has approx. a 75% yield rate. If you get in, you go.

Hope I cleared that up for you.

Some of this was resolved while I was writing it FYI

Yea youre pretty much spot on abouthe everything here. Maybe it's just me, but the whole college application process/admission process is fucked. I worked my ass off throughout HS, murdered my standardized tests, voluteered, ran clubs, etc etc etc and for what? For schools to pick your name out of a hat to see if you get in?

Then again, Im just another smart suburban white boy. I'm not really al that special lol

I probably have no idea what I'm talking about honestly, I'm just tired and a little drunk

And I'm complaining. I fucking hate people who complain all the time. Oh well

We da same person brah.

I've heard it works out 95% of the time though, and for those who it doesn't work out for, they end up transferring or taking a gap year.

Applied to:

U of Utah

U of Colorado Boulder

U of Colorado Denver

Western State Colorado U

Western Washington U

U of San Francisco

U of Vermont

U of Connecticut

My top choices are U of Utah and U of Boulder. I applied for Business Admin. I'm planning to switch to a more specific major for my junior and senior year. I'd really like to pursue law after undergrad. U of Utah has a recognized law program and is a good school. Regardless, I can transfer to a more prestigious program if everything goes well. I'm from the CT, but I plan to live out West eventually. My choices are basically places I'll think I'll be the happiest and do the best.

It's a pretty good school. If you're a good student and have above average grades and test scores I wouldn't worry tho.

I think a few years ago average incoming freshman had HS GPA of 3.6, ACT of 25, so in that range. So just get good grades the rest of this year and do well on your tests and you'll be good.

It's relatively easy if you're an average to above average student. It's a good school but it's also huge so there's gonna be a huge mix of kids in terms of academic level, and they don't have to be as selective as smaller schools.

NE is a safety for me...I liked it, but I didn't love it. BC is gorgeous. Not applying there bc of a lack of an engineering program.

I have a friend at BC, and I've visited him a couple times, it's super fun there, people are chill. You party with people from a lot of different schools lol

Nice, I might try and just work a lot for a year there, get residency and go to school for mad cheap. I still need to look into it completely

I visited UTK for a week for a church camp thing and it was alright. Walking around campus is tiring as fuck and it was hot as fuck. Also no skiing. I enjoyed it but isn't a contender for me
