This works if you know your ski is in a 10×10 box. Proper method to find a lost ski in a larger area of powder is to unclip other ski, and use your poles as a way to expand your reach, extend your arms to either side and start walking around with your poles in the snow creating two more potential points of contact as you drag them through the powder. Eventually you will find your ski this way.
 
Helpful video, but he didn’t mention to be aware that with each passing moment, you’ll get more and more frustrated as your buddies heckle you and tell you to hurry up since you’re wasting precious time on a pow day ?
