How to determine proper cant on boots

I just discovered that I can adjust the cant on my boots, and I've been playing with it for a couple hours. How do I know what the proper cant angle is for me?

First off what you have is cuff alignment not chanting. The way you want to set it is pretty simple. Take the liner out and put your footbeds in the shell. Then stand into the shells and loosly do th top buckles. Then you want to stand in the center of the cuff. Have someone check from the front to basically want to have an even amount of space either side of your leg. You can use the cuff alignment bolts to get it close but honestly don't worry to much about it. Getting the foot neutral with footbeds and getting the correct shell fit are more important then the cuff alignment but that's not to say it's not worth doing it's just you need to ensure other things are working well before you start adjusting.

This ^^

another easy way to adjust your cuff alignment is to simply loosen the screws (not all the way) and then flex your boot repeatedly for about 30 seconds or so. its definitely not exact and I highly recommend just going to a boot fitter, but its simple enough to do at home and will help your alignment a bit

That method will only work on boots with an auto can't like the Lange rx for example. Most boots which still use cuff alignment use a method of a off center bolt so that the cuff can move up an down to change te angle. Unfortunately this method can sometimes change the pivot angle of the cuff which can be undesirable. in these case sole canting may be needed. But in terms of sole grinding I honestly think you will see this less and less moving forward. Backcountry is becoming huge and softer soles mean that sole canting is les effective. Custom shell boots are also allowing for better cuff and clog alignment then ever before. In my opinion for 90% of people a good custom footbed and a shell which works for the shape of the foot will get people most of the way there.

^ good to know. I still have a lot to learn as a boot fitter, and I always appreciate learning something new. Can't wait for MasterFit next year!
