I have been trying for a bit, and can't seem to get it. I know Phillip Bloom did a tutorial, but he was dicking around with the sequence settings and stuff like that. Is there a way just to do it when exporting?

Im shooting 720 60fps if that means anything.

+K for help

not sure about fcp, since i use premiere, but look for a crop button or something and take ~87 pixels off the top and bottom to get 2.35 if thats what you were looking for

for a 2:35

in FCP 7

Export using quicktime conversion

options

size

custom 1920x816

preserve aspect ratio

change letterbox to crop

de-interlace

that should be it

thats how i did it

Bingo.

Thanks everyone for your help. +K to everyone.

So if I do start using this crop, does my subject need to be lower in the frame? for example, If I am filming a rider and his helmet is at the top of the screen, if I know im going to be cropping it in post, should I compensate and try to put his helmet lower in the frame so it doesnt get chopped off? Thoughts?

if you're planning on making your edits 2.35:1, you should definitely film for it. i think some people actually put tape on their LCD to do this, but you can just use the crop bars in ML. you're going to need to start shooting wider than you're used to probably. i also suggest not filming right next to a feature with a 2.35:1 crop, because you're going to have to cut off their upper body to just show their feet, which looks awful imo.

when you're editing your clips in fcp, apply a widescreen matte and set it for 2.35:1. then you can adjust the offset of your clip, meaning you can move it up and down vertically to get your framing right.
