How to bring a dinosaur back to life

So I made a thread a while ago about I don't care. So some of you may recall that my dad does shit with dinosaurs. Mounts million year old fossils. Does exact bronze reproductions. All that good stuff. A little backstory before I really begin with the point of the thread. My dad's an artist. Professor of drawing/metalsmithing at a local college. Years and years ago he was commissioned by the Natural History Museum in NYC to make a bronze replication of one of their dinosaurs. he did, and boom. Now big names like Spielberg, Steven King, Ben Stiller, etc... own my dad's sculptures.

Now to why I'm making the thread. On the side of my real job I work for my dad to make some extra cash. He gets orders for dinosaurs or any of his other stuff and passes them right down to me and I make them from scratch. Just today I started my first Tyrannosaurus Rex. It's pretty big...a lot of intricate pieces...and frustration. Each day I go into work on it, I'll post up my progress so you guys can watch how I bring a dinosaur back to life.

Today I started by shooting waxes. I use molds that have been used thousands of times. You shoot wax into the molds and get a wax of the part you're currently making.

As an example, here's a photo of two of the claws I shot.

Here's the progress so far. Every part of the dinosaur was shot today (some aren't in the picture, though.) Tomorrow I'll come in and cast them in bronze. After that, I put them together, mount, clean up, and I've got a dinosaur. Sounds easy, right? Well that'll be another ~6 hours.

Until nest time, here's a photo of my dad's most recent smilodon piece he did. Shit's cash.

And here's an article on my dad where you can view a lot of his stuff.

Turns out I have a bit more time so I'll document a bit more.

Shooting waxes one of the most frustrating things I've ever done. The wax injector needs to be the perfect temperature, pressure, and amount of wax...and it varies for each mold. If it's not perfect, you'll get bubbling, air pockets, flashing, and just all around shit. And there's so many molds. 18 today. 18. God damn.

And some are so small that when they get flashing, you've got to take a scalpel to the tiny parts of the piece to make it perfect...and it takes forever.

Also, Muslim Matrimonials ad on my screen.

It all depends on size...and who it's being sold to. If it's one of the people we regularly do business with, we'll sell a T-Rex for around 450, and they'll turn around and market them for upwards of a grand. The one I'm making now will be going directly to Ebay as a test we're conducting. Starting price will be $450 and we're hoping to being in close to $1200 if we're lucky.

Was expecting some post about resurrecting dinosaurs from DNA, but you didn't disappoint. Post up finished work! Nice!

Sorry it's been a few days since an update. I didn't get in one day, and real work has been getting in the way.

But progress!

Yesterday, my dad and I went in for a few hours so we could get some flasks in the kiln to burn out the wax. To be able to do this, the waxes are melted onto a base like in the pictures. Along with the T-Rex pieces, I also got an order for some shark tooth stands, so I wanted to hammer those out quickly while I was there.

After you've got that, you attach a flask to the bases, and mix up your plaster for the mold.

Once you've got a smooth batch of plaster, you vacuum all the air out of it and then pour into each individual flask. Once again you vacuum the air out and then top them all off. I forgot to take a picture of this step...oops. But after that's done, you let all the plaster-covered waxes set and harden before you throw them into the kiln to melt all the wax out. What are you left with now? Plaster molds of each part that can stand up to the heat of molten metal. Now I'm getting ahead of myself, though.

Tomorrow I work real job, so there won't be an update, but I'm hoping to go in on Monday to crank out some bronze parts!

And as requested, some more of his previous stuff.

All of the following pieces are part of an extinction series he did years ago. I think it's the coolest stuff he's ever done.

Do you guys only make dinosaurs? Or could you make something completely different? Like a skier grabbing mute or someone dancing or just something different?
