If you work in the ski industry as a photographer, cinematographer, editor, tell us your story! how did you break into the industry, what advice do you have for young skiers looking to work behind the lense?

p.s. if you aren't a filmer or photographer please bump this thread so those with knowledge to share see this.

thanks!

well you see.... the secret is to hide in the bushes while crews like stept and tabarnackpack are hitting urban and just get all these dope dank ass shots and right when they finish go smash all their cameras and then sell your fo0tage for a squabillian dollars to them. You're welcome. Naw fur cereal this is just kinda a bump to help you out idk i'm potatoed.

Step 1: get connections

Step 2: get at least semi decent at taking videos and/or photos*

Step 3: get connections

Step 4: get connections

Step 5: become professional filmer/photographer

and after you become pro...

Step 6: get better at taking videos and/or photos*

Step 7: master your camera**

Step 8: be the best photographer/videographer you can possibly be***

* optional (but recommended)

** optional (but not recommended)

*** do not take this step. Your ego will be too large at this point for you to even function as a human.

Do selected genre as a hobby for a while first for fun

Meet other enthusiasts and share knowledge

Network

Be flexible

Don't tie yourself to just one specific skill or style, mess around

Money doesn't always create good visual content

Go to College and get the Paper that says you know how to do what your saying you can do. The experience during varies (I wasnt the most stoked on mine) but the Paper opens tons of doors.

When you do land a job, remember to continue doing personal projects. Sometimes clients can leave you a little creatively stunted so doing your own work will keep things fresh.

Teach others/Get other people into it, great way to stay stoked

Hope this was somewhat helpful, just never take yourself too seriously and things will fall into your lap.

lots of helpful advice so far, thanks everyone!

I currently live in ontario, and ski at a very small ski hill. I've done a bit of filming every season but its been pretty tough out here since I am literally the only skier with enough interest to work on film projects. I'm not trying to come across as cocky or anything, but if i'm behind the camera theres not very many other skiers to film. this past season i did quite a bit of filming with a non skiing photographer/skier and found it very helpful to work with another creative mind. we ended up with quite a bit of footage but very little in terms of decent skiing due to the challenges of our location. The process was still a lot of fun even though the final product wasn't so great.

Next season i'll be moving to kamloops and skiing either revelstoke or whistler, im super stoked to get to a place with a better scene and hope to do alot of catch up in terms of skiing and filming as ive only spent 4 weeks combined at decent locations over the past few seasons. It would be really helpful if anyone could give some more specific advice on networking once i get out west. I'm really eager to learn and surround myself with skiers and filmers willing to let me tag along and absorb everything they have to offer. If anyone could put me in touch with some contacts out there thatd be great, or just some general advice on settling into a new ski scene.

If anyone is willing to let me ski with your crew pm me! I'll carry your gear, build jumps, whatever you need in exchange for getting my foot in the door of the revy, whistler scene!

thanks guys!

1) buy a go pro

2) be a pro filmer

3) get fat

4) ???

5) profit

alot of "pro" guys arent fat, it appearing being fat only brings you to semi-pro NS status.
