how newschool started

alright, how did this whole jumping up in the air and spinning alot come about in such a traditional sport, and who came up with sliding rails? im doing a proj for skool and im teaching the class about newschool, but i need a general history of it i guess, so any sites or even stupid comments about how it came to be would be sweet...

Look up the following names: JP Auclair, JF Cusson(first ever mute 3), Vincent Dorion, Mike Douglas, Shane Szocs, Johnny Decesare(Poorboyz Productions, he's done a lot for the sport). Start with those, and then you'll have an idea of where to go. Look around and if you're semi resourceful, you'll find ways to get in touch with at least 2-3 of those people. I don't wanna get into any history because I'm sure some of what I've been told is completely wrong, but newschool starts with JP, JF, Vinnie, Mike, and Shane, as far as I know. You won't find any books written on the subject, so you're going to have to go by word of mouth. So try getting info from the guys I listed above, and go from there. Oh and do everyone on NS a favour, and post your work once it's done.

Helpful(maybe) hints: To perhaps talk to mike, try sms camps website(www.smartmogul.com) and for Shane try www.highnorthskicamp.com. good luck and remember to always be polite and succinct when dealing with pros, as they have A LOT of demands placed on their time.

of course, there's more to it. Shane McConkey and Seth Morrison, along with many others, really pushed(and continue to do so today) big mountain skiing in the right direction. There's A LOT to it, so I suggest you split your essay/report into a few different sections, and mesh them together in your conclusion

didnt it start out just modifying old school tricks. They had 360's and 720's and backflips before newschool. We just added style.

My girlfriend told me to shove my skis up my ass

i invented newschool u know, yep back in the 70s, i dont want it, but they just keep givin me credit for it

there is a sort of history in the Canadian mag SKIER. it's when they interview mike D and Shane Szocs about the revolution...

JF threw the first ever mute 3 in competition, and can lay claim to inventing it PERIOD.

aight fine, here's what I know, mostly through hearsay, magazine articles, and other shit: Back in the day, a couple of kids were skiin' bumps in Quebec. They were also spending time jumping with snowboarders, and would even spend time on snowboards when it was possible. One of them was JF Cusson, the other was Vinny D(not sure...). One day JF was working on mute grabs at some random little jump on some crap hill with Vinnie, when along came snowboarders. The snowboarders laughed at them, JF got pissed, and threw his first mute 3. Later on, the two met JP Auclair while skiing for the Quebec mogul team, and they started chillin' in terrain parks(only they're speaking french, so it's 'l'austi'd d'terrain park de marde'). The more they ski bumps, the more they get pissed at it. In 1996 or 7(maybe earlier) JF throws the first ever mute 3 in mogul competition, touches down on the landing, and gets a SUPER low score for that jump. The beginning of the end.

While all this is going on, Mike D, Shane Szocs, and Marc McDonnell(haven't heard that name in a while eh kids?!) are skiing bumps at Blackcomb, chillin' with/coaching the national team, and generally jumping on their days off. They find out that a misty flip is possible on skis while screwing around with napkins at a whistler restaurant. Mike D wants to huck one off the Blackcomb windlip(off Glacier chair,I think. There's 2, in case you're wondering. One off 7th Heaven too)

Through some kind of weird fate thing, Mike D and Szocs end up coaching the national development bumb team. JF, JP and Vinnie are on it. They are BRIGHT prospects for the Canadian team. Trouble is, they spend all their free time NOT skiing moguls. Mike D follows them around one day, and finds them in the park. What he sees is revolutionary. Skiers GRABBING and spinning. He knows what to do next, and starts skiing with the boys, and Shane too. They make crappy videos, and shane ends up at SIA vegas to show off the videos. No one cares except a dude by the name of Johnny Decesare, exprobumper/owner of Poorboyz productions, out of cali. He takes 1 look at the tapes and KNOWS that he's found the future. He bets his company on the 5 Canadian kids with mad skills. Filming for 'State of Mind' commences...

State of Mind is released, and that summer some weird skiing is seen on the glacier. Also seen: JP teaching a bump skier by the name of Johnny Moseley how to throw a mute 3. Johnny uses that mute 3 to win at Nagano. He later claims to have invented it himself. Freesking is beamed into millions of homes worldwide, and mogul commentators don't quite know how to explain/can't quite grasp the reality of what just happened(the mute grab..). Fast Forward to 1999(I think), Mt Snow(I think), X Games, first ever skier big air. Mr Moseley is in first place after the final's first jump. He is throwing some kind of rodeo or a corked spin(dinner roll) and is holding both of his poles in one hand. JF Cusson is in second throwing some kind of spin(Not sure, 720 maybe)Moseley has a HUGE lead in points and decides not to take his third jump, leaving Cusson with one last jump. Cusson drops into the inrun and spins to fakie. He performs what could be considered the first ever fakie 720 in contest history(shaky at best by today's standards), sticks it, and moseley decides to take his last jump. He tries an inverted 720 and crashes hard. JF Cusson wins the first ever Xgames skier big air. Combine that to his win in the 1998 USFSO(slopestyle, 3 jumps, 3 different grabs) and JP's win in the big air at the same event(mute 3), not to mention Vinnie's lunatic driving to the Summer Xgames big air demo in san fran after being left off the original 1080 team, and throwing down SICK fakie 9s and 7s, and you have the beginnings of what is now known as Newschool. Remember that while all this is happening, other athletes are joining in, and Mike D/shane szocs are getting Salomon and K2 to make the first really commonly available twin tip skis(1080s delivered to JP and JF at 98 USFSO, but only for the awards ceremony) and Mike D is pretty much babysitting JP, JF and Vinnie, cuz they're super young. That's a really quick incomplete summary of what went down, and more people will add to it/fill in the blanks, but you get the idea.

as all y'all can see, it's not a easy question to answer. Perhaps the only people who would really be able to COMPLETELY answer it are Mike Douglas, JP Auclair, JF Cusson, Shane Szocs, and Vincent Dorion.

Mike Douglas landed the first misty ever in 96 and invented D-spin. More info www.freezeonline.com

Oh and Iisko heiskanen from finland did 1080s in 96 and 720s in 94, 540 mute in pipe 98.

you can first off thank glen plake and warren miller for all his filming credits and of course as much as i may not like to admit it snowboarding say what you will but newschool is nothing more than old hot doggers getting some ideas from snowboarders and throwing it together with what hot doggers have done in the past. glen plake was and still is a god on skis

i though back in the 70's grabbing your skis was kind of a joke, and then early 90's started to be cool

Nah new school started when terrarin parks popped up and snowboarders thought they were badass until they challeneged their skier buddy to a run through the terrarin park. (actaully thats how it started for me so I'm just joking)

well that's how the mainstream commercial deal started. there were other small groups of people that were doing 'newschool' before that.

Newschool started from surfing, which spawned skateboarding, which spawned snowboarding which spawned newschool skiing. I would say we have more in common with those guys than the old timer skiers.

If you don't think snowboarding, skateboarding, inline skating(sorry, it's true...), surfing, and other sports didn't have a HUGE influence on newschool skiing, you're wrong.

since i first started skiing i was going off and grinding bent over trees and shit years before any hills i knew of even had 'terrain parks' the biggest thing that influenced me to start grinding and shit was my inline and skateboarding during the summer. however this all stemmed from needing more adrenaline so overall i believe adrenaline junkies are the founders of newschool

Gotta Love The Midwest

how could rails possibly come from surfing?

Crashin' with Passion'

You know your a good skier when you drive your standard car all the way to the resort in your ski boots.

surfing is the root of EVERY action sport. without surfing there is no skateboarding, and without skateboarding there are NO rail slides, think about it. It's an action sports 'evolution' theory of sorts.

sure people back in the day were throwing backs and fronts and of course spreads and daffys and shit, then snowboarding happened and started doing all sort of off axis tricks while grabbing the thing they were riding then skiers finally realized they could do that too and now look, boardings still ahead of skiing too

'Now, I'm lubing up the little toy car so, I can put it in my bum' - Ryan Dunn

yea skiing is older then surfing, but this type of skiing isn't more then 6-7 years old and surfing has been around longer then that.

did stein erikson start doing the first back and front flips with small spins in like the 50's and 60's?

Acid is like a women, a good one will eat right through your pants.

Yeah, without surfing, there wouldnt be any of this.

Does anyone know why old skool hotdog skiers didn't take grabs and didn't spin off-axis? These tricks seem so obvious now, so why didn't they invent those. I've heard that story about Stein Eriksen too, there was also two other guys, just can't remember their names.

here's what i know. the canadian mogul team (jf cusson, jp auclair,etc...) was training in whistler one summer and in their freetime they'd go into the park and try to mimic what the snowboarders were doin!
