So im headin up for the first day this season on new skis tomorrow, how much should i detune underfoot?, ill be hitting some rails so yeah, like i have a sanding sponge and stuff, but how much should i shave the edge down?

sanding sponge wont do it. Dont make the edges completly round, just like i said in my post above, 6-10 passes with a diomond stone should do it. Skis always come overly sharp from the factory anyways and should be properly tuned. But since you are talking about park skis, just de tuning underfoot is fine.

just so it doesn't come to a definite angle, just a slight curve. Your edges will round over time too. I spin left side onto rails, with skis I've had for 1.5 seasons, and it's so dull on the left edges.

Here is my input..

First off, what you have is not a sanding sponge. It is called a gummy stone. It is very effective at removing small burrs/imperfections on the edge itself. It doesn't take off nearly as much material as a file, but in this case that is a good thing.

With the gummy, do 10-15 passes over the entire ski. This will help to minimize the almost guaranteed imperfections that skis have when they come from the factory. Next, start working the furthest contact point on the front/rear of the ski. This will help to minimize the hooky tendencies of some skis.

At this point, you should be set. Hitting rails will detune underfoot pretty fast which means you really shouldn't pay any extra attention to the underfoot section of the plank.

Oh by the way, do not take the advice of one of the previous posters. A diamond stone is only meant for finish jobs and it will do nothing but make your edges more rough/imperfect if you don't know what your doing.

Stick with the gummy stone.
