How many skis do professional skiers go through a year?

depends. i know on3p guys go through (at most) 3 pairs a year, but thats because of the build quality and the cost of replacing them. for larger companies (atomic, fischer, volkl, k2, salomon, etc) riders go through a ton more pairs. not necessarily because they are completely destroyed, but for comps it looks better if a rider is riding a fresh pair (no chips and shit when they are on camera). for those companies, it is better advertising, and it is such a small cost compared to their overall costs, it doesnt really matter

for example, do you think nick goepper went to the olympics with skis that had topsheet chipping and base damage? no, he went with a brand new pair, as he probably does for all major comps

It really does depend on the skier and the company though. I'm sure a lot of the bigger name skiers have piles of skis like this. I know Dale gets a similar stock pile from Nordica, but other guys on the same team get like 4 pairs (although a lot of them can request more if needed). It really doesn't have anything to do with durability, it's mostly appearance, companies don't want beat up skis all over the x-games or dew tour, or even in bigger edits so they give their big names enough to make sure they have freshies when something big is coming up.

Also I think the LTC guys get new skis all the time. I also remember hearing Gus say when it was his last year on Armada he used the same pair all year.

Pretty sure pete only went through 1 pair this year, maybe 2. He was on 1 pair of 4frnt devastators all season, just mounted the new ones like a month ago.

I went through one pair of devastator's this year. Skied them almost everyday since the beginning of november and they were still good to go in April
 
Transworld snowboarding used to do small one page rider profiles and they would include things like the riders sponsors, contests won, video parts, and so on. I remember one of the questions was how many boards do you go through a year many would go through 7+
 
I talked to the Slopestyle people in breck and what i got from it was that Henrick would basicaly mount a new pair every comp.
 
I ski around 200 days a year and go thru 3 pairs of surfaces generally. most of the homies go through a similar amount. Far from pro's but we put our skis through a buuuunch of shit
 
depends on the ski. At the shop I work at we had probably 10 warrantied volkl walls from ABM just for 2 months of riding. Those things are absolutely junk. But then say Cody Cirillo who rides faction didn't even completely bust the 1.0's he rode on when he came in to switch em out for 2.0's.

yeah every time he was in breck he brought us a new pair to mount up. We've got 2 old pairs that are busted in the most awesome ways in the back (like sidewalls being bent into the ski, other freaky shit). haha

Another thing to consider too is, a lot of the bigger names are riding prototypes, which can generally last a lot less time, or are constantly getting swapped out.

Unless his skis are built specially for him so they're stronger, thats bullshit. Mine after half a season have a solid 20 total edge cracks at least and are probably gonna be done for after a couple more days on them, and I don't ski half as hard as he does.

same with my punx but id think they are different, atleast mike riddle's are, my local shop has a pair of his since he used to work there , and they are soooo much stiffer and have at least double the camber and i was comparing the normal ones and his and the edges were thicker and the top sheet had a different feel to it.
 
Half of the way through a 50 day season I already went through 3 pairs of surfaces so it depends on the company quality for just the average ski bum.

Even though you're reading comprehension isn't at it's finest, I really do wonder how many decks a pro will go through in a year of skating.

I don't know how people go through skis so quickly. I've been on Pun Jibs for 2 years and they are a really nondurable ski. They are beat up but they can ride.

the point when a pro replaces a ski =/= the point when an average park skier replaces a ski.

skis wear down over time. as the materials in them wear down, they are more likely to malfunction when doing tricks and stuff. by malfunction i might mean an edge tearing out, tail snapping, etc. to the average park skier, this is only a problem because now they don't have a pair of skis. but to a professional who's just bringing around the last rotation on the winning run at the dew tour, a ski snapping would be a devastating thing. add to that the fact that these dudes abuse their skis exponentially harder than most people, and you've got a recipe for 10 pairs a season.

also consider that pros and the companies they ride for have an obligation to show cosmetically sound skis. if two skis from two companies are exactly the same, but timdoodly willpoppers is riding a perfect pair and tomshoot mcwallydad is riding a pair that looks like they've been through a blender, which ski are you more likely to choose? subconsciously the brand new pair seems more durable, even if it's only an illusion created by the fact thay they've only seen a day or two on snow.
 
Yeah it depends more on the skier than the brand. Luka Melloni and Noah Albaladejo get through minimal pairs of Syntax each year, but McRae likes fresh skis for big contests because he doesn't want to leave anything to chance. When these guys retire a ski it's doesn't have edges hanging-out or the tips exploded.

Not a pro but I was on flow for a while, I went through 3 decks a month on average and 2 pairs of shoes, wheels lasted a month or so and trucks around 6 months.

Skis wise, most sponsored guys I know (flow team mostly) only go through 2-3 pairs a season.

In general people go through what they are given near enough, if you have 10 pairs, you'll switch every time you aren't feeling good about a ski, even if there is nothing much wrong. If you know you only get 3 pairs, you'll make them last.

I've heard pro skaters get a bunch of boards every month and basically change them out at will. usually its too many boards and if you have a pro that skates locally they will probably be hooking up the local kids.

he hadn't been on 4frnt very long at that point. it was probably 4-5 pairs of whatever he could get his hands on. there was an ar7 and t hall in the mix at least.
 
Im by no means pro, but i go through about 2 sets of pow skis and 2 sets of park skis a year, shit just gets broken when you ski a lot. you can feel the change (especially in pow skis) when they start to degrade and are about to give up the ghost
