How Is This Transition Done?

I know, this thread seems a little unnecessary, but I really want to do something like this, but can't figure out how to do it.

Refer to 0:57 of the video, right as the rider goes across the screen.

I am editing on Premiere Pro CS5.5!

a matte in adobe after effects on the layer being transitioned into. The subtract matte simply moves off the footage in the outline of the rider

maybe he means "masking" out... that's what i do.. just look up some after effects videos on youtube that go over masking out video

there are matte controls down in the layers panel. There should be a drop box, set it to "subtract"

So I got a variety of answers of how to do it, so I just e-mailed Joey Szela, the guy who actually made the edit in the OP about how to do the transition, and this is what he said....

Hey Ben-

Thanks for the e-mail, always a good move to double check on stuff like that.

So the secret is just masking in AE. Essentially, you drop the first clip onto layer 2, then next clip under it on layer 1. Then you create a mask that subtracts from layer 2. Then you need to go frame by frame with keyframing the masks shape around your subject. Its pretty tedious but the final product usually turns out sweet. Let me know/send me your final product!

No I completely read your post, I was just making sure that people knew it was the right way, and didn't try using mattes, as those didn't work. I actually had it figured out because of your post before he emailed me back

/images/flash_video_placeholder.pngheres this to maybe help you out, sorry its call of duty but its the only one i could find, let me know if this helps you sorry if it doesnt

i didn't suggest mattes, i was referring to masks. as well as letting you know what to google. glad you found out, though, man!

Haha no I know you said masks, 1337 said to use mattes (I think he meant masks as you did), so there were two different answers, but yours was the right one.

And the masking videos on youtube really did help so thanks a lot!

could this be done in motion? because i am editing in FCP and Motion, or is there a way to export it from AE so it will work in FCP? please i need help

Im sure its possible in motion, but i have never really learned how to use it really. You could definitely take the two shots into AE and make it happen, export it , and then bring it back into final cut with the rest of the clips without any problems I think.

i just tried and it came out really grainy and awful quality, anyone know the correct way to export for AE to FCP7?

Just got to - Composition>Make Movie.

Then when it comes up make sure the output is to lossless, and click on the audio checkbox that you get from the "lossless" yellow link if you have sound you want. That should export it in the exact same codec you put it in with. I go from AE to FCP all the time that way.

how do you do it in vegas pro 11?

i already have the first clip masked out but i cant figure out how to get clip 2 behind it
