How is living in SLC?

I will be graduating later this year, and am considering places to live with some ski culture. Salt lake is on the top of my list due to the density of places to ski in the area. I've heard that the city is fairly diverse minus the Mormon influence. How is the night life, number of powder days, living expenses, and atmosphere of the city?
 
Been a few times...pretty awesome little city. Amazing views and obviously skiing is ridiculous. All cities have good food to be found. Though it is far from a NYC or San Fran in terms of night life.
 
Cheap housing, rather abundant jobs, decent skiing and touring kinda close all out weigh the shitty bar/liquor laws imo. Drinks may be weak, but they are cheap. Last time I was there you could buy a pitcher of beer for $4.

Yea, I agree. Alta/Bird are the only two that Im really looking at. Personally I would say get to the Sandy area, more of a ski/outdoorsy vibe than SLC. Plus no smog.
 
Accessibility to world class terrain is unrivaled. You won't get it anywhere it anywhere else in the states. There are a shit ton of people that ski here though, it's kind of give and take. Some resorts are better than others. A powder day on the weekend at Snowbird? Forget about it, I live at the bottom of the canyon and I'm not kidding the line of traffic stretches bumper to bumper for miles on miles. Then you get to the resort and have lift lines.

SLC the city is great. Like said above it's pretty cheap living, and lots of job opportunities. It's just like any other city, and mormons will literally never bother you unless you seek them out.

Who the fuck cares about the alcohol thing? Everyone complains about it but it's just a difference of measuring by weight rather than volume. That is a 20% difference so every 8 full proof beers equal 10 Utah beers.

If I had a nickel for every time someone made a thread about this I could retire now at the ripe age of 25.

lol, you must be thinking of somewhere else or have never been to SLC, the smog doesn't just sit over downtown, it settles over the entire valley and a lot of times beyond. Sandy is definitely in the thick of it

Damn the times I have made the trip from WY it wasnt even close to that bad!! That is some pollution!

yeah man it gets pretty gnarly, luckily this winter hasn't been quite as bad as last year

I was about to say the same thing haha. That smog fills up that whole valley until you get a storm to flush it out.
 
If you value culture, diversity and things other than strictly outdoor sports, SLC is not a great option.

If you are just looking for an outdoors mecca, SLC is the best option.
 
I can't go to SLC without stopping at one of the Red Iguanas, so huge points for SLC on that front. Also would be nice to have such great mountains just a short ride away. It's not a huge city, but it's a city for what it's worth. Nobody is touting SLC for the night life, but for the right person it could be great.

Also they have a great freeway system for the size of the city so if you're a street racer that'd be great although I imagine some mormon judge would throw the books at you hard core.

In college I always envisioned myself moving to SLC and working at the copper mine. That didn't happen and now I'm in Denver. Probably for the best, but life in SLC wouldn't suck.
 
SLC is a great place to live and has great schools too, I had a great experience at the U of Utah. Cheap housing, great neighborhoods, good people, good bars, amazing skiing. What else would you want? Summer is pretty fun too, some good water here and there and infinite outdoor activities.

The fun multicultural aspects of a metropolitan city/area. I found it to kinda have the vibe of a classic skitown mixed with Des Moines, IA like whitebread blandness haha. For a "big city" its pretty darn bland. If you arent doing outdoor stuff, there isnt much to do. Not necessarily a bad thing for the right kinda person.

Oh yeah fully, I can't even imagine what people do who dont ski and shit. I wouldnt call it a "big city" at all though, not even close.
 
Also to add SLC has great public transportation if you need it. Especially to mountains and back. Some of the buses can get pretty crowded though, but nothing unmanageable.
 
don't move to sandy. it's a sucker bet. mormom suburbia. the 15 minutes of skis commute it saves you is not worth it. move to sugarhouse or downtown IMO.
 
I live in sugarhouse. Its dope. Don't worry about the Mormons, they literally have no effect on your life besides the liquor laws which aren't really that bad as explained above. Pow days on the weekend can be challenging to drive, I really believe a rail system needs to be put in place. During the week it's always vacant though. The inversion sucks and I wish there were more restrictions on the mining in the valley. Proximity of good skiing is unmatched by anywhere else I've been. Living is super cheap, jobs are plentiful. Can't speak on nightlife beyod the college scene but it seems pretty average from what I've gathered

I heard there's plans to expand the trax line to Park City, but who knows when that will start, let alone be finished haha.
