How does steel go as a box surface?

i guess you could make a really skinny box and call it a rail if you make it out of steel

i have a 16x2ft box that is sheet metal on the top and it slides just like lexan or anything else... the thing is when you buy it get them to bend down the edges and drill holes so your not going to rip up your base

 
we have a flat down box out of steel, its really smooth and i like it alot

if you want to make a box for cheap dont use steel. its much more expensive, but its nice and durable

steel sucks..it has very little memory and rather quikly it will get bumpy and dented. the various plastic have much better resilence and stay flat except when in the sun if you have plywood as an understructure(plywood retains the heat from the sun that shines throught the plastic..heats up the plastic and it warps). best bet is to use half inch plastic..you can got up to 24inches wide with supports only at the edges..it wont heat up an warp and wont sag. you can see it in theses pictures.

I made a box last year with a sheet of plexiglass on the top, and it worked well for a few days but it eventually started to chip away...One prob. was that we glued the plexiglass down cus when we tried to drill it cracked it...

 
yeah we used plex and it chipped a bunch. it does crack when you drill it. we are waiting on some polyethelene that my firneds da is supposed to get us
