How do you feel about social networks?

How do you guys feel about social networks today in general? I ask because a) im generally interested and b) im looking for input on a new start up I am working on.

Personally, I feel like social networks, especially Facebook are getting really dull... the general quality of information and enjoyment I get from Facebook has really faded. IMO.

What would you guys like to see from a new social network?

group chats with who? Your friends? Or a bigger community of people? What type of relationship do you want to have with the people your talking to? Do you want to learn from them, make fun of them, etc? +k thanks

i fucking hate Facebook so much..

all those stupid fucking posts where its like "your friend liked this post" to a celebs wall just bitching or "this women saw this man raping her son so she grabbed a knife, do you think he got what he deserved?" and all it shows is a fucking black guy with huge cuts on his back. Makes me sick that people actually think that by liking these stupid posts they actually do anything.

only thing i use it for nowadays is to check NS house whistler group and Sportchek ski team groups.

facebook is responsible for me throwing my computer out of the window 90% of the times i throw my computer out of a window.

Would you guys be more inclined to use a social network if you were actually gaining knowledge from it do you think? Is that a way that you would want to learn?

The very idea of commoditizing our social relationships and incorporating this network into everyday life is beyond fucking stupid.

I totally agree with you, but this is happening regardless of how many people think its crazy. So my next question is, how do you capitalize on this phenomenon? So thats why I ask, what type of social network you would ACTUALLY be interested in using?

I like Facebook. It's easy for me to customize by weeding out "friends" and making sure I don't have to read some people's statuses on my news feed. I travel a good amount and my family is spread out all over the country. It's an awesome way for us to share simple changes in our life with one another and trade pictures or other media. I also have a ton of close friends from college who live all over the world. Being able to keep up with them and my family simultaneously is invaluable to me.

I think Facebook's novelty is starting to wear off and become less exciting because it has become so ingrained in our culture today. I find it to be an extremely helpful tool for anything social. I mean how do you host parties, get a hold of acquaintances or show your friends links? A lot of people will complain about the amount of data that facebook keeps records of but I think a lot of it is to enhance the user experience. I think as long as you accept that facebook is making money off providing you with personalized advertising and other relevant content you can get over the information they hold on to. If you don't want them to hold certain information don't put it on the internet period. They don't have any information you haven't given them willingly. I think facebook is great as a content curating. meaning having your friends posting interesting things they find on the internet. If I were to create a new form of social media it would be more of a mix between facebook and twitter in that you would subscribe to feeds of your friends or people with the same interests and they could post content but with a better broadcast than the simple less than 140ish characters. like full write ups and pictures with every broadcast...... so basically a pintrest but with a better userbase. haha

Do you guys think people would actually begin using a new social media, given the amount of change required before its as universal as facebook or twitter is now?

Atleast twice a day i consider deleting my facebook, it's just so time consuming and addictive. It's pointless. Sooner or later im just gunna give up on it.. twitter on the other hand i dont really mind.

It would have to solve a problem that people have with the current sites. I would say that ya something like the aforementioned subscribe to feeds without being friends so you have relevant interests. Also not as much censorship maybe...

i deactivated my fb about 7 days ago. i got so sick of seeing everybody's god damn political views (some were intelligent but 90% are stupid sluts that have added me) on my news feed that i spent a day just trolling everyone that posted a status, then decided i would just delete it. i have to not log in for 7 more days and (so it says) it will be permanently deleted. needless to say ive been spending more time on ns and my overall happiness in life has increased since then.

that's just a trick, it won't be deleted. you have to delete it yourself, i had to search google to find the option because facebook hides it.

wait so the message "your facebook account will be permanently deleted if you do not log in for 14 days" that i got after "deactivating" is a trick?

if your account at the moment is "deactivated" then ya it's bullshit. i had to use google to delete my account it redirected me to facebook in the contacts section......seems like a good place to have the delete your account option?

if you mean you are planning to launch another social network of some sort.... dont bother haha

I would like a mix of stumbleupon/facebook/twitter. Hard to describe what i really desire but I want a site that you can get your news from, listen to music, find things you normally wouldnt see and talk to friends all without leaving the site.

[Visualizing the home page]

At the top there can be a bar with news like yahoo.

The right column could be trending music, friends listing to... or up can coming music. Of course you could get specific too like picking certain genres or decades.

In the middle of the page would be the feed of friends. Twitter and instagram style. I dont have one but i like their style, no comment statuses.

The right column could be ads or what ever the provider needed to make money.

This is all off the top of my head, just trying to give you an idea. I didnt proof read.

Thanks for the input, I'm just curious as to why you say that? If a person has a good idea, something that truly different and has the potential to succeed, why would you automatically assume not to bother?

They are pretty damn amazing except for all the idiots who ruin it all.

I personally prefer forums out of all social media because they offer a much wider discussion/culture then just you and some friends.

I agree, so would you say that peoples motives for social media are changing to more of discussion and learning, as opposed to just having friends and posting statuses?

How do you expect to make any money off it when corps. like facebook have trouble with revenue?

There are already hundreds of social networking sites, do you think you can make a unique one?

Not tryin to hate just sayin.

no no, I dont think you're hating at all. It's a good question, the idea for this whole project started about 2 weeks ago and since then I've developed what I think to be a real business idea that truly is different from anything that we have now and would be potentially a HUGE thing, given its done right. From everything I've read, a huge issue with making revenue for social media is that there is a massive disconnect between the expectations that companies have what current social sites are able to offer in terms of actually identifying who their market is and who they need to be advertising to. I think I have an idea that closes this gap.

So yes, it is a crazy thought and a massive project to undertake, but to some extent if you have good reasons for getting into something like this, and theres even a 1% chance of hitting it big, don't you think it's worth thinking through and giving it a go?

personally i dont like facebook. I see its purpose. I believe that it naturally leads to static relationships that are not necessarily based on commonality but something else (obligation, family, creepy kid at school) whatever im not hating its a good way to keep in touch with friends. I think that for people who activily participate in any type of group activity, a social networking app/site that would put you in contact with others who ski or ski near you or when you plan a trip to a mountain, it tells you who else is also going is a brilliant idea. My friends have a large group of people who come with us occasionally and often they get butthurt bc they arent specifically invited. An activities based site/app could cater to this as well. You could have a friends list that would be able to receive invites ect, or a public notice/invite that anyone could send out for ride share, learning a new sport, activity ect. This idea is more of a way to meet people who you share interests with or who partake in activities you would like to learn. (so if you are new at kiteboarding and you are going to traverse city this weekend kiteboarding and you would like to meet others who also are doing that in traverse city this weekend, this site could provide an outlet to expand your network of buddies who all do sweet shit

I guess the whole premise is to expand your social network with individuals who enjoy the same extracurricular activities as you and not so much keep you updated on your second cousins political opinions. Like I said facebook has its place but it doesnt promote growth in our hobbies which i think is way more important to me.

i'm most likely going to delete my fb in the near future. shit has run its course, imo. my newsfeed is bombarded with random shit (i.e., games, events, etc.) that i don't really care about and posts by randoms that aren't really my friends. that said, if i "cleaned" things up, i'd be left with the 35-45 people. as a guy, i don't post pictures and if i do, it's to instagram cause i don;t take album worth of shots. that said, fb chat/message has its purpose (unless you've got everyone's cell phone number) and does a decent job of allowing you to "catch up"/stalk someone. twitter is my status update. so yeah, facebook - chat - loads of bs = twitter + instagram. moreover, shit can be a distraction at times. just the fact that fb contains such a wealth of info about me (and free of cost) is somewhat fucked. marketers dream

thanks for the input man, so aside from status updates and pictures, do you see social media as a place for actual meaningful discussion? I mean I guess it could be used for anything, but in your opinion, would you go to a social network to discuss and learn about things?

as a social media marketer. you are correct. their ads tool is amazing. even if you don't make ads the ad tool itself is a great source of information.

Probably can't speak for everyone, but yeah, I would. That said, isn't that moreorless a forum? As a finance student, I'd find it dope if there was a finance forum/network to discuss stuff.. FYI, I'm on my mobile (ie can't edit).

I like it, it's a great way to connect with people that you havent seen in a long time or live far away from. I don't understand why people get some kind of self satisfaction from deleting their facebook account.

reasons for deleting facebook accounts:

1% - because they actually feel an invasion of privacy

99% - so they can claim they did it

you guys all take this shit way too seriously. i just go on fb to see what funny things people say, make sarcastic remarks, offend people, and go about my day. pretty much what i do on here....

I think most people dislike Facebook and claim it's stupid and that the quality has gone down, is all because they accepted any and all friend requests. That's their fault. Try deleting your account and making a new one, adding ONLY the people you really want to hear from and I guarantee you will like it again. Then you don't have all this clutter of idiots trying to appear smart and happy.
