How do terabytes work

since theyre so cheap now at bestbuy i want to just pick one up to throw all of my footy on it, and save gigs on my laptop.
but can i save programs like FCP for example on there and still run it on my comp? (being a 50gig program thats more than half of the HD space i have left)
so i guess my question is- does a terabyte act as an expansion to the harddrive of my macbook, or does it just act as a removable disk

Thanks!

A terabyte is a unit of measurement, it's 1000 gigabytes.

I think you mean to say can you run programs off an external harddrive, which may or may not have a capacity of 1 terabyte. Yes you can, I'd say it's better if you're connecting it through firewire to run stuff off it and since you're on a macbook than you probably are.

I think I answered the question, right?

a terabyte is a measure of disk space, like a gigabyte. i assume you mean an external hard drive that has a terabyte of space. in that case yes you can save all of your footage on it and edit it from the external, i am pretty sure you can install programs onto it and run them off the external, but it is slower than installing and running them off your internal hard drive on your computer

ok thanks ya you both answered my question. basically the biggest reason i want the terabyte is so that i can have Final Cut, without using most of my laptop's harddrive.

final cut is not a 50 gig program. if you install all of final cut studio, its around that, but do you need all of it? final cut pro is only 5 or so gigs if i remember correctly

this.

but it does wonders for storing your footage on.

right now i have a dual enclosure with 2 1 terabyte drives in it. its definatly keeping me satisfied.
