i'm low on money after paying for COC and new ski's. Need new bindings, and i dont know if i should buy some low end binding or get the good ones. How do they really make a difference to your skiing?
Well a cheaper binding will most likely be made out of more fragile materials such as plastic, as well as having not as good release features. For example marker m11's are cheap, but they are made of crappy plastic and pre-release all over the place, whereas if you buy say, an FKS 140 you get superior release features such as the turn table heel and better durability.
Trust me, you're better off getting good bindings from the start, which will last a long time, then getting cheap ones. I got m11's on my skis because they were part of the package and i hate them. constant pre-releasing,and the heel piece is already messed up after one year.
Ever have a binding malfunction end your day of skiing? Better bindings = less likely to malfunction, and since you'll be at camp all week, it would suck to have your bindings break at the beginning of the day and be stuck on the hill all day with no skis. Buy the bindings that are right for you, but don't cheap out, there are several different options for durable bindings (FKS style being considered the best by the majority of people, but not the only option). I know money is tough sometimes, but I'd really recommend finding a way to get some decent clamps...check the Sell/Trade forum and see if you can get some really good bindings on the cheap, or spend sometime checking the outlet sites and off-season sales for some good bindings that wont break the bank.
I've never bought "new" bindings. Ever. I've paid between $3 and $200 for used bindings, and they're all basically the same binding. One pair is two years old and one pair is 20, but they're both the same binding and perform the same.
Actually if you know what you are doing you can score a high quality used binding for real cheap on ebay or NS/TGR. I just bought a pair of FKS's with some nice carving skis for only $150 off ebay, I'm planning on the selling the skis for around $200 and keeping the bindings.
