How did you ladies spend your summer?

Camped only twice bc of the fire bans, kinda sad to camp without fire lol. Hiked a little. Mostly studied for entrance tests for grad school so my summer blew. Snow can’t get here soon enough.

Oh man you just reminded me I probably ruined my lungs this summer from all the wildfires and subsequent smoke inhalation. This summer was dry and smokey everywhere out west. I remember looking at the EPA air quality map and pretty much all of the western US, from California to Colorado to British Columbia was orange or red for air quality. Camping sucks if you can't set some marshmallows on fire.

I’m about to go into a southern summer after the lamest ski season ever in Australia... (10/10 recommend NZ over aus) ...

I think imma have to invest in a mountain bike and maybe rock climbing???! Agh summer is scary (first summer in 3 years)

Work work work. My summer actually sucked. I tried skateboarding, rode my bike alot and went on a ton of walks. And more stinkin work. That work problem is gonna change very soon. Im switching to a more laid back job with normal hours so I can have a life again.

Got a grant to hang out in europe doing research, worked, got apid to process an archaeology collection. I worked 7 days a week in may, july, and august. :/

I tried skateboarding last summer, it was nice because I lived next to an elementary school that had this great large newly paved parking lot with a bit of a half pipe shape to it, and it was always completely empty. Now I live next to an actual skate park and I haven't gone skating once, everytime I go by it it's just crammed full of scooter kids and has a tiny fraction of the amount of paved space. Looks like a nightmare. I don't know why they don't have adult only skate parks, or adult only hours. Most people just see skate parks as a free daycare for their children not dangerous places where people are trying to practice an extreme sport. It's the number one reason I don't think I'll ever get into skateboarding.

Glad to hear you're getting your life balance in order.

Sounds like a cool experience, I've never been to europe. Freakonomics did a podcast recently "Here's why you're not an elite athlete" and it really helps to put into perspective that sports being the only thing in your life is not necessarily the greatesthttp://freakonomics.com/podcast/sports-ep-3/

That being said I hope you are able to get some good ski days in this winter.

OOO Freakonomics sounds like a cool podcast. I graduate in December so I'll hopefully ski this winter.

I didnt do much on the skateboard as i haf no access to a large paved area. Just the garage. I like that idea of adult only hours.

I was super inactive for sports but I bought an old school bus van and turned it into an insulated camper van to travel in and ski around the country this winter :) living for the snow

You just need to find a good summer hobby. I know mountain biking is pretty popular there. Or even better get into dirt jumping, it's cheaper and more fun anyways, you can find used dirt jump bikes for a couple hundred dollars. I've been almost every day at the dirt jump park this last week and I'm wondering why I even mountain bike. My muscles are wrecked from jumping, so it's clearly a good workout, and it so much more satisfying and obvious when you make progress compared to pedaling up the mountain. It's also a nice little community, doesn't take long before you see the same people and start chatting at the top of the jumps.

I'll have to have a look into that. Melbourne seems really "city" orientated to other parts of the country which I was not prepared for.

Ive never tried dirt jumping! is it scary ?? Lol

It's not any scarier than jumping on skis :)

I think it might even be easier, I've seen lots of newish bikers pick up jumping small jumps pretty quickly, where as the same cannot be said of new skiers picking up park jumps. Dirt jumps are a lot smaller than ski jumps and the smaller lines are table tops so you can roll them or case them and it's completely fine. The green lines are usually only like a couple feet, so very simple to ease into. You have to be really active on dirt jumps though, I'm still learning to pop correctly. To pop on a bike you really have to do an ollie. If you don't unweight the front end and pop from the rear tire then you tend to nose dive. I still land nose heavy sometimes, but you just roll it out assuming you aren't hitting anything huge and don't accidentally grab the brakes.

As a skier you'll have a huge advantage in that you'll instinctively use your legs and not your arms. A lot of new bikers try to jump by yanking with their arms and that's a huge no-no, it's a good way to crash. If you just pretend like you're skiing you'll have a huge leg up on most the other people learning to jump. Definitely get some knee pads though, and maybe some shin pads too, you will slip some pedals and those things are sharp. Pedal carnage:https://imgur.com/a/S2r77il

It actually sounds really awesome! I'll see if there is anything around the area :) I'll keep you posted might need some help with gear :)

Sounds interesting. I've never heard of dirt jumping either. I love jumping on skis so that would be something to look into when summer comes back here.

I bought a horse in the spring and it was really nice to get back into riding. I used to showjump in highschool and I really missed it. I'm so broke though, last thing I needed was another expensive hobby hahaha

The only time I've been on a horse has been on those tourist beach rides and pony rides as a kid. Both were highly enjoyable. I hope you have many good years with your new horse friend.

Moved up to Montana to be a buckaroo, turned out to be a joke, and crushed all of my childhood dreams.... got to ski in August though, so that was swell

I can't wait till I'm at a point in my life that I can just buy a horse honestly hahaha

Enjoy!!
