How did YOU bounce back?

last february this happened to me:

and I've been rehabbing it all year to get the range of motion and strength back. With ski season around the corner I've been getting stoked to get back after it. Anyone have any advice for a recent injury recoveree on their road to redemption and fearless shredding?

Do you live in Calgs? If so awesome, also I've been fourtunate enough to never have anything that bad happen to me.

The amount of adrenaline that was pumping through his blood as soon as that happened probably helped

yeah we shoveled for a full day to get enough snow for the jump and kind of just threw a layer of snow on the frozen ground below lol. The night after this happened we got a foot of snow, funny how shit works like that. by the way this is in central NY

well ya dont need ya elbow to ski ya dringus. bouncing back is much more of an issue if you have an injury that directly impacts the physics of your skiing, like an acl, broken femur or a back problem. i'm comin off an acl and i'll let ya know how it goes. probably just gonna take it slow and work my way back up, get more and more confident like any other injury

Meh coming back from ACL wasn't that bad. You realize your limits fairly quickly and you'll be 100% confident within a few years. That being said, I stopped wearing my brace this year and coincidentally re-tore my ACL. The brace wouldn't have saved me, it's all mental.

I skied 2 1/2 months after shattering my femur, tibia and fibula. working at the ski hill and not being able to ski while seeing all of my friends shredding around me was motivation enough to say fuck what the doctor says, i'm skiing dammit. but in all honesty, go out, take it easy at first and your body and mind will tell you very quickly what your limits are and how fast you should progress.

What the fuck dude. I burst out into tears over a paper cut. Meanwhile you're over here breaking arms and just giving no fucks hahaha.

i broke my arm super gnarly last may and i just finished recovery. i havent bounced back yet but i feel like if you break your arm skiing bouncing back mentally for skiing will be harder than if you break it doing something else like skateboarding. work your way back up slowly

my physical therapist said that theres no evidence to support braces help prevent re tearing but i got one for this season nonetheless. was it the same kind of fall as the first time?

i blew my shoulder last year. im just trying not to think about it. i got a few weeks in at the end of last year, and just tried not to ski timid, as i feel like thats when i have the best chance to get hurt.

Describe "shattered", because my cousin compound fractured her femur and was in traction for long than 2.5 months, and I compound fractured my tib/fib and was casted for 14 weeks with about 9 months recovery including rehab.

If you shattered all the bones in your leg, i dont see how its physically possible for them to refuse and integrate into the metal supports you must have had implanted into your leg. I'm taking a biomaterials course all about this stuff and I know it takes a long time for bone to grow back together and especially fuse to metal implants.

I'm coming off a traumatic brain injury, I've just been doing a lot of easy runs, getting a feel for my skis again. I'm thinking of heading back into the park in January or so. Getting back into the swing again can really suck sometimes.

that broken enough for you sweetie?

That's hardcore man, props for getting back on your skis so soon. How did skiing that early affect your recovery?

I only skied groomers and pretty much just used my good leg the whole time so it didn't affect it much at all. Its all healed up, rads are totally clean and I spent all summer being super active with no problems

Dislocated my femur from my hip a couple seasons ago doing a flat 3, i was out for like 2 months and a bit. I didnt do physio or anything and just went back up knowing the worst that can happen, and i tried to not make the same mistake or think about it. Once I did another flat 3 i started to feel more confident.

everyone saying they didnt do phsyio or listen to their doctors is a complete dumb ass. kid please please listen to what the doctors tell you. and go above and beyond on the physical therapy. not only will you HUGELY lower your chance of getting injured again but you will look mighty sexy for the ladies.

but shattering your elbow is not exactly something you can train against now that you have shattered it, you want as much muscle and range of motion back as you can get. do your exercises EVERYDAY.

i tore my mcl completely playing soccer and it took me 7 weeks in a brace and another 3 and a half months before i could play in games again. then probably a total of 8 months till i was completely comfortable on my knee going into tackles and what not. i knew that i had done everything in my power at the gym to get it back to normal but there was still a lot of doubt.

get to the gym, listen to the doctor, and dont fall again on the elbow;) and you will be fine. hope all goes well for you.

hell yeah it is, that thing is broken to shit!

which really doesnt help me in understanding how you were on that after 2 and a half months.... are you human? or did you get a complete artificial bone implanted? theres no way in hell that you should have skied on an injury like that after 10 weeks. youre a nut.

I am a nut. Simply put. I was going batty watching my friends ski while I had to download the chairlift at work. Fortunately I am pretty good at skiing on one foot. Plus my pain tolerance is sort of obnoxious.

That's fucking gnarly. Props for being a beast on an injury that often gives people a permanent limp. It was really stupid of you, but props.

I broke my femur back in december then spent the summer in hood..it's intimidating at first but you gain confidence with every day back and by mid summer I feel like I was better than I was before i got hurt

Listen to your specialists. Do what they say. I broke my neck, fractured my pelvis, dislocated both my femurs amongst other things in one crash. I did all the rehab I was told to do and more and 18 months later minus nerve damage I'm almost completely back to normal. My bones all healed in place and I have very few symptoms. I'm allowed to ski fully, run and everything again.

I skied slowly at around 7 months and it was great. You just have to remember what you did was a freak accident and the chances of you doing again are so slim that it's not even worth worrying about. But you don't want to be the person who goes back too early and fucks yourself permanently.

Start slow and work up man. Don't push yourself too hard for the first bit then just slowly start progressing. Use music, i find it definitely helps to pump you up

yall are the shit thank you for the advice. Its really inspiring to hear from people who have come back from injuries way worse than this!

i got a distal fibular fracture on my left leg on april 7th. i semi spiral fractured my fibula inside the ankle in my ski boot hitting urban. then on memorial day weekend i skied for the first time since my injury and it hurt like fuck!! i couldnt afterbang i couldnt scissor to do open switchups. it was rough going but it felt good. for me it was all about being completely confident in myself. then over the summer i hit my friends summer set up and was totally fine and did most of the rail tricks i had been doing before my break. but i also followed my pt and listened to the doctors and that is a major part that will help you. now i have to wear an ankle brace if im going to do anything active. but all you have to do is beat that mental block and be comfortable and trust yourself again.

I shattered my pattela last year and I was back skiing within two months... When you come back to skiing it's all about taking it slow and not making the injury worse then start to progress gradually back until your huckin nuts again

Can't post it but I broke my finger in 3 places and it popped out if it's socket. While I had my cast on I hucked harder than I ever have

I broke the left radius and ulna at snowflex this summer. I am still not lifting heavy with it but once I can I will be going to the gym everyday to get everything strong for the season. I'm also going to wear my brace when I ski so that will help because my buddy who had the same injury says that he didn't feel comfortable bailing on his bad arm for quite a long time, but a brace helps.

ive broken both elbows, humerous, and dislocated my shoulders countless times. start rock climbing, that shit will make you strong as hell and take your mind off of it. then when you start skiing again you'll be stoked.

Hyperextended my knee spring skiing in late april, tore my ACL, capsule, and bicep femoris tendon and was rushed to surgery. Recovering was tough but seeing all of the posts of the october snow has motivated me even more

Usually I just go back out and stick it to the park, but I have yet to bounce back.

Shattered collarbone 2 seasons ago right near the start. Came back last weekend of the season not even cleared to ride only to fuck up my brain and my feelings. Torn quad last season.

Hoping I can bounce back this year and still be able to ride the park. I feel like I've going to start of the year with 0 confidence in my body or terrain park abilities.

I ruptured my spleen and broke my collar bone in february, in ICU for 5 days.

Had a 2 month recovery and caught closing weekend. I was super anxious to ski and just eased into it the first day. Second day, I skied with kids who got me stoked and I ended up landing some knew stuff and doing a lot of things in my previous bag of tricks. I basically had 100% confidence back after that. Just push it to the point you feel comfortable then scare yourself a little. You will feel like you were never out.

Fractured my knee cap in march, in a cast and on crutches for 2 months. After I was out of the cast I went straight to PT and got strength and flexibility back at about late may early june. Then when I felt comfortable I started to tramp and Ive been tramping all summer since june. So i'd say im well prepared for the upcoming season. good luck on your elbow dawg, id were a brace or something just for support.
