we are using video footage from a Canon 7D and overlaying audio from a seperate recorder. Our mac desktop handles the footage fine(no lagging) but it takes 50 min to render a 20sec clip of video and audio.
Is their a way we can speed this process up without getting a new computer?Your help is greatly appreciated!

This is assuming your using final cut to edit you footage with.
If im right you need to download Mpeg Streamclip. Its free and works great. Change your video files to AIC (apple intermediate codec) or prores 422, which is a bigger file but better. This allows you to edit in final cut without having to render after any minimal change.

Rendering in Vegas and FCP are pretty different. In FCP you render the clip as soon as you bring it into the program/make any altercations to it unlike Vegas where you just render everything at the end.

Does that kill the quality/how long does it take? If it takes longer to convert the file than he's waiting for rendering, it seems a bit pointless.

Vegas is weird how it uses RAM though, there's something up in preferences where you set up how much RAM Vegas will use. try finding that and setting it up a bit higher. How much RAM/what's your processor speed on your computer now?

No it will not kill the quality and it will be miles faster than rendering in final cut. Prores is the better file -marginally - but the file is twice as big as AIC. When you put a clip into final cut directly as the OP said it takes forever, and every little change that you make in final cut (eg. cutting and moving a clip) you have to render it again.
Doing it the way i suggested means that when you put into final cut you no longer have to worry about re rendering, unless of course you are doing colour correcting, or other fancy stuff and it will be a lot easier to edit with.
This is from my experience so hope it help. Oh and i have no idea about Vegas, sorry.
