Hooking up to xbox live

Alright, i want to hook up my xbox to live, but i have a problem. The first of which is that i know nothing about how to hook it up to the computer or anything. The second is that the xbox is in the basement, and the computer is on the 2nd floor. I really have two options, from what i can tell:

1. i can get an extension, then drill through the floors and run it down to the xbox. another problem with this is that they aren't really lined up, vertically speaking.

2. i can drop like $100 to get the wireless router thing. my house already has the wireless all set up and everything, so all i'd need to do is register then i could just start playing.

i'm curious if anyone has the wireless, is it worth it? how well does it work? Of these options (or anything anyone can come up with) which would you do?

Oh, and i do have the money for the wireless, but i'm trying to save as much as i can if possible

option 3: just quit and have someone else do it cause you don't know what you're doing

you don't hook it up to the computer dude...im assuming since ur house is all wireless that you have a router. (if u dont, invest in one, ur about 6 years behind lol). that's what you're gonna hook it up to, not ur computer. and to answer ur question about the wireless...its deff better to have it wired, or atleast a suuuper good connection. its not that hard to run a wire thru the basement or ur room. it might just be the way my house is setup, but i have a finished basement and we just threw a cable across the ceiling of it. same with the room but it'l come from the floor. ask ur dad and if he's semi-handy he should know what to do. depending on the setup it could take an hour or 2, but thats much less then $100 and not having a good connection

if your going to do a wireless connection, do yourself a favor and get a flash drive so you can just suck out the info you need from your computer and throw it onto the xbox instead of screwing around trying to find stuff. I have a wireless connection and it works great, its seperated by 1 floor but it is a lot better than some connections I see, this isn't really hard to do once you figure it out. Good luck though, the first time is such a pain if your not sure what your doing

ha, thats a good idea to start with.

And whoever said i had no idea what i am doing is completely right, i won't deny it. And before even reading your response, i pretty much followed your idea in that i'm having a friend who had the same problem figure out a way for me to do it. thanks

Why don't you just move your wireless router downstairs, run you computer on wireless and then hook up your xbox to the route downstairs?

seeing as your house is wirelessly connected, you should have a router. i've never had good experiences wireless video game-age. my wireless router has 4 wired ports in the back. you should just be able to connect a super long ethernet cable to the back of your router and bring it down to the back of your xbox. i don't know where your router is in your house, but just see if it has ports, if not you need to get that wireless thing, you can't do much else.

by the way the ports look like this

just use an ethernet extension and connect it to a router/hub which connects to the back of your processor which hopefully has road runner/dsl and youll be fine. probably need a 50ft+ extension to go a floor down. i do the same thing except mines upstairs.

i ended up getting the wireless because me and my friends who have done it to their houses were looking at how we'd have to run the Ethernet cables, and it would be very difficult to do. There was no way that we could run the cable the whole way because of the location of staircases and other stuff.

yea thats probably the cheapest idea. Replace all my games and the console itself with a more expensive one that i have played twice, and absolutely hated each time.

Thanks for your extremely significant contribution.

Well, if decide to get a wireless transmitter, don't buy the Microsoft brand. I bought a computer wireless transmitter for 30 bucks and just used that instead of the 100 dollar Microsoft one. But, the connection is much faster when you keep it hard wired, so I would recommend putting your computer on wireless and move your router downstairs to plug in directly to the xbox.

for now i've decided to put it all on hold. I don't have the money for the wireless adaptor, and i dont have the time to be drilling and running a wire through pretty much my entire house.

and way to be a douche skiboards4life, i openly said that i have no clue what i am doing with this stuff, so rather than fuck the whole thing up trying on my own, i thought i'd ask for some help from people who know how, or have maybe even faced the same situations.

Its people like you that make this site suck in some cases.

A lot of computers have built in wireless....you should check yours. If it does, move the router downstairs next to your xbox, and run the computer via wireless. It won't cost you anything, and is probably the easiest change to make. If you computer doesn't have wireless, $30 for an adaptor wouldn't be too bad.
