/images/flash_video_placeholder.pngwhat happened to stocked rosters like this with crazy shots? I haven't been interested in a ski movie much since the year after this one with revolver and the way I see it. Everyone is now out to make a skiumentary, telling a story or narrative instead of just showing awesome athletes doing awesome things. Hell, msp hasn't put out a proper ski movie in 2 years now. I know amateur movies have come a long way, field productions and stept have really kind of taken the reigns as far as just good solid ski shots, but those companies don't have the budget the big 3 do to make segments like the one above happen. Lastly, movies like the wallisch project just show how splintered the whole pro community has become, everyone used to pitch in to make awesome segments happen, so companies now have to fill the rosters with whats his face and o yeah that guy. It's just sad I keep watching the same 4 movies year after year to get hyped about the season or the weekend.

+k actually laughed

Just got a letter in the mail and my health insurance was raised in extra $300/month.. and that's exactly what I said.

this

level 1, stept, 4bi9, field production -- all made banger movies this year

People said this exact thing back during the EDIAS days about how nothing was as good as War, etc. Its all a load of shit, people just are nostalgic about certain videos or lose interest. I mean sure, I do the same a bit, but there are so many banger movies and edits still coming out that are straight up awesome.

Honestly it is the fault of the internet of things that has diluted your thirst for movies. There is such a flood these days of video on the internet that is totally instant coming from so many sources its hard to create hype around a ski movie in the same way you could even 5 years ago. It has meant a lot of things changed for example budgets have been sliced for movies as companies get far better statistics from google analytics from social media hits than from made up dvd sales demographics. If all of the skiing footage from an entire year was only released between August and November you would have years of froth to watch. Since you get to see it all the time on demand you really need something super special to even make you watch it twice. From a production perspective this makes it super hard to wow you as your appetite has been quenched daily and locations a re rarely exclusive o a film any more as a tweet or instagram video spill the beans instantly. Also since Canon released the 5d with video mode it revolutionised film making and introduced a lot of people into the delicious world of depth of field and cinematography and video editing thus making it much more affordable for any crew to shoot nice pictures which has closed the gap between the big companies and and crews. Its not that the big movies are not as good, its just that everything is so much better than it used to be.

I agree with you in some respect although i did think the last years flicks were pretty good, especially enjoyed level1s and 4bi9s particular films. Mainly the thing i miss is the mad park seggys with all the skiers landing crazy shit.

I think I speak on behalf of everyone that has seen "Supervention", when I say it is straightforward the best ski movie of the 13/14 season... Field Production have used years and years to get to the place where they are now, and I guess that's why they can afford a bigger budget, and therefore they get better shots and better quality.

Dude you're just overexposed. The movies coming out now are fucking amazing and are really about to come into a whole new level of creativity IMO.

Its just you. Every year I'm thrilled with the new releases! This years films that I've seen have all been awesome in their own way.

Man, I can't remember the last time I heard the names/seen the names Alexis godbout, and Andrew Hathaway as well as tj shiller in an edit.

That movie came out right about the time that I was reading my bros ski mags, and watching freeskier mag podcasts, I remember thinking "when is it going to be at galaxy movie theatre." Thanks for the trhowback OP. But I think that ski movies now are just on a whole different level, not necessarily better but the shots people are looking for now are a lot different than the shots people looked for then. I would think this is mainly due to the fact the filmers don't want to film something that's already been shown before because they want to be unique and wow the audience. I'm sure if every movie now had the exact same shot as previous movies with just different tricks you wouldn't be too happy. B/c you have seen it before

I attribute it to how people describe crack use. Your first good hit is always going to be the best and then you are chasing that first experience from then on. Just stop trying to chase that first good experience by comparing and appreciate each ski flick for what it is. Or there is always rehab.

Watch the newest Stept movie and All.I.Can.

While i don't think ski movies as a whole have fallen off, i think the power has shifted. TGR and PBP kind of have fallen off from where they used to be, and Level 1, Stept, and Sherpas have taken their place. MSP still kind of has the same flavor, McConkey was majestic.

i think back in the day movies were more epic because there weren't so many sick edits from pros dropping throughout the year online. it was like you had to wait a full year to see any footage of your favorite riders, and made it more special.

Partly Cloudy might be my favorite movie ever, and everyone else killed it. 4bi9's movie is dope, TGR's is sick, PBP was sick, Stept killed it, it was a good year for ski movies

As someone above was saying, I think we've just seen a shift in who is making good movies. PBP is pretty much dead and although many of you may disagree with this, I think level 1 movies have been very meh for the past couple years. I still buy their movie every year but I have ended up watching each one start to finish just once, save for a couple interesting segments (Wesson, LSM, Real SkiFi, and Sun Valley segments come to mind). On the other hand, guys like Stept and Field Productions have been on fire - in my opinion Mutiny is by far the best ski movie of all time.

yeah i would definitly enjoy a new pbp movie with jossi, tj , sammy, dane, andreas, tanner, etc. The roster for pbp movie at that time was insane!

A perpetual stream of quality edits has cannibalized the ski movie industry.

This trend will not be reversed.

The economics of making a ski movie will change and high quality and progressive skiing will be delivered to you daily through upstart /local/ rider owned prod companies backed by Armada, Skull Candy, Nordica Etc.

PBP are moving into more stuff like Detroit, they are supposedly having an eastern Europe urban shoot, Hopefully they get back into the swing which ended with Revolver

A few of you guys had comments like this. I LITERALLY SAID THIS, LITERALLY MENTIONED STEPT AND FIELD in the op. I was asking honestly, so I guess it is just me. If anyone has a recent movie with a banger park segment i would love for you to list it. I do want to see fields new movie, prob watch it tonight.

and again, just to make my point, I literally mention stept and field as examples of small companies taking the reigns. I'll add level one to the list, anyone got any other recommendation especially for park?

It seems like all you care about in your ski movies is just pure ski porn. in my opinion ski movies need to be better than just that. If progression in a ski movie is hitting urban with another kink or adding another 180 to your double count me out. I'd much rather watch a movie that has a bit of a story to it with more interesting riding. With into the mind, all i can and vahalla amongst many more coming out in the past few years I'd say ski movies are taking a turn in the right direction.

theres a difference between thematic movies with commentary i.e. revolver or the way i see it and skiumentaries i.e. superheroes of stoke. I actually hated the actual movie ski porn because there was no talking

I watched a bunch of the movies at IF3 and they all got me pretty stoked, but I think LaFa's movie is what you're looking for although you're right, those companies don't really have those massive budgets you're talking about. I personally like it when the film isn't just ski porn though, it keeps the watcher more engaged when the shots are a bit staggered yaknow?

I think its just you.

PBP makes bad movies now. Thats just the way it is.

MSP makes the same movie ever year now, thats just the way it is.

Level 1, Field, Stept, and 4bi9 are all killing it though.

I thought this years 4bi9 was very old school. Just rad ski porn, and no added bs of weird themes, dialogue about how much they love skiing, or any of that.

Sort of related…But I feel like MSP's new movie is going to suck really bad. They dropped Michelle Parker's segment as a promo just recently and it was good skiing and filming, but they added in that stupid fucking MSP comedy/humor/shit that ruins every one of their movies.

they fell off after the Game, propaganda, stereotype, Royalty, 1242, Blunt, like seriously tho they never had the same vibe to me after that.

msp always adds in those stupid little skits. they arent funny and dont add value to their movies. whoever writes those "jokes" should not become a stand up comedian
