Homemade Ski Rack??

Ski racks are so expensive. I really want one but cant afford one right now. I would love to be able to fit 2 more people in my car but cant because I have to fold down most of the back seat area. I saw a plan for a homemade rack system in Skiing mag a while back. Their design consisted of a couple of 2x4s and some bike tire tubes and some nuts and bolts. The only problem with this was it required the car to have mounting bars already on it. My '96 legacy sedan has a naked roof so it would not work.

Anyone ever built a homemade roof rack system? Even better, on a car without mounting bars?

just do as this guy i saw at my hill do

he had a corvette and had a window mount ski rack which was cool but driving a corvette to my hill is just stupid oh well it was sweet and they are just rubber and metal check for them

I see this thread is OLD, but I searched for the same thing for hours and found very little. Here is what I did on my convertible sebring. Cheap trunk mount 2 bike carrier. Attached a pvc pipe with U bolts on the closest bike holders. Wrap up skis, bungee to the crossbar.

70 MPH and a 3 hour drive later, didn't budge an inch!

I would look on Craigslist or Walmart for a universal roof rack Ive seen them go for like 40-50 bucks. Sure they aren't meant for skis and they don't have the clamp type thing. But If you have some straps or rope (I would highly recommend para chord) you can just set the skis across the bars on the roof and tie it down. Works perfectly for me, and if you tie it down tight with solid knots you wont have any issue.

I once saw a ski bum in the parking lot who somehow made a roof rack out of wooden tree branches... personally I wouldn't trust that, but I mean this guy also hadn't renewed his license tabs since 2008. Good Luck

I second this notion.

Back in my early college years only one friend in our crew had a car and it was a tiny ass mk4 gti. We used the same bike rack idea but just strapped the skis on with bungee cords and squeezed 4-5 of us in that little clown car. You can probably find one of those bike racks on CL for like 20$.

As an added bonus your skis will now serve as a ballin racecar spoiler.

roof racks are all over CL. you can easily find it there or at a garage sale. I picked up crossbars and mounts for a 2011 5 series for $100 and it goes for $350 new.
