Homemade Rails

If you've made any homemade rails (PVC or metal) post them here and describe them a little!

Here's the one that I made in shop this year. 8' steel, top is 2X2 and supports are 1.5X1.5. Paint and primer are both rustoleum. I MIG welded it.

If I get pictures of my friends PVC Cannon, I'll make sure to post them

I made a couple PVC rails basically just pvc on a 2x4 with t shaped legs made of 2x4s but theyre both really unstable. Any ideas on ways to make them a little sturdyer?

Just add Some planks going diagonally from the top of the support to the outside of the leg

nice rail bruh

Thanks man

If you used a welder from harbor freight does that count? I made a bunch of stuff in sketchy conditions. Haven't anything at my home though. Probably will buy a new rig for the house when I get back and pump out a few for friends through.

I don't think my rails count. If I build some shit in my garage I'll post em though.

pretty sick although you probably only need half of those supports. all you're doing is adding extra weight.

Got the metal for free and I could imagine it would help with it's durability. Next year I'm making a 8' tube so I'll try just using 2

Hows the length working for you? At some point it'll probably start to feel too short for you. If you can you might want to go 10'+ on your next. If the 8 feels short probably a 12' min. IMO 16' is kind of the perfect size. Long enough to do a lot of stuff and hit with some speed, but not uninviting for leaning new tricks.

I guess it depends on how much speed you're taking into it as well.

Not much speed, and idk how I'd get it home at 12'

True true, wasn't sure if it was for a summer set up or winter use. Summer can be tough. Can always combined the two for length. Ender on here had 2 8ish ones back in the day we used to throw together in the summer. Def had limited speed sometimes. Can always go yolo on your drop in and make it huge though.

As far as transport where there's a will there's a way.If it's not too far it shouldn't be a problem. I built an 4' tall 8' wide skate 1/4 at school in 03, had to cut the deck off to get it out the door but was able to get it a ride in 2 sectioms in a pick up truck. Was only a 5-10 min drive though.

That said rails aren't TOO bad. I rolled with this puppy for 5 hours after I bought it off craigslist for cheap View attachment 586214

Ended up rebuilding it mid season but it worked for what it was. Needed at least 1 decent length rail to get a park going and got it for less than the cost of the steel so it was a win win. The one in the pic is 23', a little sketchy, but 12 shouldn't be bad. Could thro the back leg in a pick up bed and the other over the roof then strap it down. Or have it hanging up from the back 4 feet. Just mark the end up it and make sure it's strapped down and you're golden

It's for winter use but there's like no slope at all. I'll have to use that method when I take the rail I make this semester home

Word word. It's not too bad if it's not far. Do you have a drop in there? Even just a little 4' tall drop in to give you a little more speed in the winter could help you out a lot and make it easier to do more tricks.

I forgot about the NS codes again.

Also had to borrow my parents mini van for this one. No way I would have gotten it with my car.

I'd love to see that driving down the street. Also, no I don't have a drop in but I was thinking about either making one or getting a bungie

which type of astroturf grass works better? I have two options of a short type quite dense grass or long kind of stringy grass. How thick do pipes have to be to be sturdy enough not to break?

I feel like the short stuff would be better but I've never built a summer ski setup before.

Pretty much any of the white pvc pipes you'll find at a hardware store will work. If it feels flimsy don't grab it but you should be fine. Also it's super cheap. You might spend some loot on the drop in but the rail will probably only cost you 20 if even.

Yeah get that low trim stuff works best, my first set up worked by putting grass down on flat ground then pulling a bungee back. Bungee worked really good tons of speed it's just annoying carrying it back for a friend

Damn. Summer skiing on the flats

here's some advice: make sure that where you land off the rail is not covered in long glass. have fun landing in that shit

I made a box similar to this but not as good and a lot sketchier.

Why make it sketchy? Just think through what you want to build and then make it happen.

YOU CAN DO IT

Read that as grass the first time i checked this thread but now I realized it says glass lol. Have you landed on glass or something?

Yeah I think we were just really anxious to have it built, so we rushed the job a bit, the measurements weren't perfect and some of the PVC was a bit loosey goosey. Being fairly inexperienced with tools didn't help either.

Made this two years ago, pretty fun when I get the time to set it up.

Sorry for the small picture, it's a kinked C.

I read it as "im going to make" because I suck at reading Was trying to motivate you not be a dick. You can throw a screw in each end of the pvc to anchor it down more. It's probably golden though. I have(or had) a piece of shit pvc rail I built 10-15 years ago with a handsaw and the worlds oldest/shadiest drill. Pretty jenky but got the job done.

does anybody have any good measurements for the drop in set up? i don't want to make it too fast or slow then have to change it all. Im thinking about 1.5m high and the width of the top bit 50cm by 50cm. but am unsure on the length of the down ramp. Any ideas on the length, am open to new measurements too

Look through build a jib cult. That said make it taller than you need to. Never really heard anyone complain about getting too much speed.

1. How do you bend wood and PVC

2. I want to make a shotgun banana/upside down rainbow rail

1. Wood was thinest sheet of plywood that we could find, then we soaked it in water.

2. Heat pvc just slightly (we left it sit on a black tarp in 95 degree weather)

3. Toss bangers

You could also cut the shape out of wood for the sides. Then run 2x4s your desired with all the way across and toss that on a nice frame. If you wanted wood on top of that under the pvc just buy 1/2 inch or less and bend it horizontal. You can turn even 1/2 inch into some tight curves as long as you go horizontal. If you go vertical you're fighting the grain and will snap it.

For the pvc heat to bend as stated.

This is a 10ft long 1ft high pvc box. Works great

I built one like this but only 6" wide. lasted 3 years until my dad accidentally ran over it. Best box design for price imo.
