Hitting Bigger Jumps

I have recently joined the park team at my local mountain and the rest of the kids on the team are hitting the bigger jumps the smallest being 18ft me only hitting like 10-15 ft jumps ever I'm really nervous about hitting the 18 ft one. Every time I tell my self I'm gonna hit it I go in and right as I approach it I take a massive speed check losing my speed and then I bail. Any help and suggestions help. +k for helpful answers.

Get 2 people who are comfortable with them. Follow one in, amd have the other guy go behind you. Then you arent able to back out, and youll know the speed

don't speed check too hard, it hurts more to bail and hit the knuckle than to overshoot, and overshooting very very rarely happens on larger jumps

Had this problem this weekend on a super poppy 20-25. I overthought it too much and got scared, it took me about 15 of thinking about it to hit it. You just have to go for it right away because the more you think about it the more you think about what will go wrong. So in my advice just follow someone off the jump right when you get in the park in the morning.

For something new I usually just watch people go before me to gauge their speed, then just go for it. Following someone in works as well.

As others said, follow someone off the jump who already clearly has the speed perfect. Don't speed check when you're doing this, because you'll deck.

Always go a little faster just to be safe, you will know if your holding back or if your going way to fast, something that might help is to hit a few smaller jumps to get you amped up and then go for the one you want. Don't forget to pop off the jump I wasn't that good at hitting jumps at first but as soon as I figured that out I felt in full control I mean I flailed a little when I hit some big ones at first but I wasn't going to flip around or anything.

this and besides man 18 feet isnt very big but i understand the fear. Once you clear it once or twice you are set.

Follow someone else in, make sure your pressure is on the front of your boots and POP as you go off the jump so you have control of yourself in the air

Yeah, definitely pop or you will be completely out of control.

The first jump I ever hit was around 20 feet. You really just have to go for it, man. Going off a fairly large jump for the first time is one of the most nerve-racking things ever. It takes balls, just do it.

Had this with a jump last Sunday. It was a super poppy jump with a super steep landing and i kept overthinking it. Whenever I was about to hit someone would send it really deep into the landing and it looked super scary. Eventually I was just like fuck it and hit it. Wasn't a big deal it all after I got it once. Just go for the shit

The best thing is to always try to go as fast as you can. Drop in from higher. Push a ton when you first drop as you are still approaching the jump. Even speed tuck a bit. By going a lot faster, you have more room to slow down. I personally love approaching a jump way too fast so I can take very many small checks to get the speed just right. If you are caught going too slow, you cant do anything to correct that and you are stuck undershooting the jump. Also going a lot faster initially will change your perspective on how fast you are really going. You will naturally hit it faster and faster. In this case, you want more speed because it sounds like you are undershooting and not committing to hitting it with enough speed. Hope this helps.
