Hit my head hard today. first serious injury.

so today, things were going great. im progressing alot this season. im at my usual park, putting together a nice line. coming up to my last rail i decide to skip my speed check and i just go for it. i come in too high and fast and end up slipping out, falling head first into the ground. my head feels like your arm would if youve ever been electrocuted. buzzing/vibrating. im down and my head is pulsating. next thing i know some gaper in a ruroc is standing over me telling me how gnarly that fall was. i cant even understand what or who im looking at, but i get up, dazed, and put my skis on and ski all wobbly down to the patrol hut.

turns out i passed the tests but it looks like i have a concussion, everything seems pretty good now and i feel better than earlier, but im just wondering, what now? im not gonna stop skiing and hitting rails and stuff because i fell, but this whole thing has just totally messed with my confidence. im gonna be back out there shredding next weekend and i just hope all goes well.

so yeah. i dont even know if im making sense right now or why im posting this but. yea. any of you guys get an injury that just messes with your confidence or a concussion? how do you recover ? im not gonna be a pussy about it and stop skiing like my parents think i should do.

and have any of you whove had concussions had problems getting back out there? any advice? just take it easy? im pretty sure my seasons not over but still man, shit sucks

Good God just wear a helmet. I've seen way too many serious injuries that could have been avoided by wearing a helmet.

yeah. although i need a new one now, this one is pretty bad it had very little padding. im glad i wore it though. even though i think it looks weird its not worth the risk

Not to add to your stress about coming back to skiing but if you weren't wearing a helmet, buy one. My dad was ice climbing back in 99 and was avalanched, if he wasn't wearing a helmet he would have died, hell, he almost died with it on. So that is the first thing you need to do. But remember dude, skiing is a dangerous sport and you are going to get knocked down hard sometimes from injury but that's just apart of it all. Ik it's nerve racking to come back to a spot you got destroyed on. I once was at an indoor park and broke my tibia 5 minutes in and going back to that place was scary at first just because I felt like the place was cursed as weird as it sounds. But I realized it's just like any other park and after warming up and skating for a bit it was fine and the nerves were gone. If you think About all of the times you've eaten shit skiing and this is your fist serious injury, it's pretty remarkable really that you can eat shit on all these potentially life threatening features and then only seriously get hurt one time out of the thousands of times you've bailed. Just think. Nyjah huston arguabley the best street skater of all time has never broken a bone, out of all the insane shit he's done, he's never broken a bone. What I'm trying to say is that the chances of getting seriously hurt in free skiing or any action sport for that matter are pretty high but they are also pretty low as well, if that makes sense. When we go out and free ski we put all of our cards on the table, and some how we come out successful a lot of the time. The sport can take a major toll on your body but I wouldn't want to get hurt doing anything else than what I truly love to do. So pick yourself up, stay confident and positive, and know that you'll, be back shredding in no time and I guarantee within a little while of skiing the thought of getting seriously injured again won't even cross your mind.

If your looking for a good helmet that looks good get a Poc receptor bug or a pro text snow helmet, I think they both are sick helmets and you can tweak them a little to look steezy. And the padding isnt good try and wear a few layers under your helmet like a had along with your balaclava because some helmets are meant to be beanie convertible or what not. I took most of the padding out of my helmet and then I just wear my beanie and balaclava under it and it works just as well, or so I think it does. But talking about this makes me wonder how safe that actually is

First things first I hope your head gets better :). But what I would do is just take it easy your first day back. Start off just skiing groom and work your way up from that. Don't rush anything and remember to focus on having fun.

I had a similar situation. I hit a 35 footer with too much speed. Went for a flat 3, and over rotated it town my head. I was in complete shock immediately. My helmet was destroyed but it did it's job and saved me. I had a massive hematoma that took a month to heal. I couldn't walk for a couple days.

Bro, you'll be fine. Ive had dozens of concussions skiing. Ive been using the same helmet the entire time and each time im positive it saved my life.

I hope you're either kidding, or have a multi impact helmet

I'd definitely recommend taking a little break from skiing if you have a concussion. Don't get back out there until your head truly feels 100%. Take it easy coming back, I just had a pretty minimal concussion and I didn't ski for a week and a half (not really that long in the grand scheme) and came back pretty nervous on my first run, slowly gain your confidence back, push yourself a little bit harder each run. Get a new helmet you feel really good about, and do your thing. Don't psych yourself out too much, everything will still be there.

Also, if you are concussed I'd highly recommend staying away from technology..it's not so good for your noggin, bright lights and stuff. Sleep a lot, eat well. Good luck!

yeah i have a bit of a conc atm as well. It sucks because im in uni and midterms are going on right now, plus im stressed as fuck over not being homeless next year- all i wanna do is sleep more so i can recover faster and get back out there.

Lots of rest, limit your screen time, drink a shit load of water, eat healthy.

Also i'd advise wearing a mouthguard, I really have to get back into the habit of it but it adds some confidence and can prevent concussions that are caused by your jaw hitting.

Had a shitty day in the park last Monday and wasnt landing anything. Felt cool until I sat down at the computer when I got home and was barley able to see anything. Ended up finding out I had a concussion the next day. Currently still recovering from it. Safe to say I'll be investing in a helmet soon as I get well. Concussions are no beuno.

I dont know...i bought it cheap as it is one that used to be given out with rental packages.

It saves my life at least 10 times per year

pure suggestion: if I were you I would go outside for a walk/brisk walk at increasing pace ... Seems stupid but I've been through it before and the worst thing for my head wasn't lights or screens or concentrating it was increasing my heart rate. Drove me up a wall as soon as my heart rate got above threshold ... Give it a try it was pretty humbling for me

Definitely take your time with coming back. Make sure you truly are 100% back. I got a really minor concussion and was like whatever its minor I'll be fine. I had trouble skiing and ended up hitting my head really hard and giving myself a severe concussion that messed me up for months. Be careful with your head man.

my cousin told me a superstition where putting your helmet on the ground makes it cursed and means when you wear it you will hit your head on the ground. well. ive put my helmet on the ground, so maybe its time for a new one?

spooky

I have migraines i get randomly after taking a rough fall. loose my vision and end up throwing up for 6-8 hour in blinding pain.

I just realized i love skiing so much and i just don't care. It happens about 3 times a year so fuck it. it's hard to not let it affect my skiing but i just try not to think about it.

I really hope you're joking.

I'm really fucking tired of the "wear what you want" mentality. Not wearing a helmet isn't safe at all and is simply a lack of consideration for your friends and family. Just wear the shit, it's not hard.

you. are. not. ok.

get your shit checked out man, in what world can you just not care about your brain basically telling you it's fucked up in every way imaginable?

+vibes I had a serious concussion last season, it took me many months to feel "normal" I gave up drinking, rolling, and a daily weed habit, it fucked with me that hard. I had extreme sensitivity to lights and sounds pupils wouldn't dilate for months. I'm back to my old ways now and have been loving this season. You'll have no trouble getting back into it like others said just take it easy. Just saying, I know op was wearing one but seriously guys protect your brain. That head injury took the fun out of getting fucked up, at the very least wear one so you can enjoy getting lit hahah.

You can smoke weed with a concussion.. In fact I'm fairly certain its the reason I was able to recover so quickly from mine. (Yes I know that's anecdotal evidence)

It wasn't that I couldn't it was that something changed in me Idk how to describe it, I just didn't want to anymore at the time I had been a heavy smoker for years I loved the shit with my heart and soul and still do now.for about 5 months I couldn't get high with out feeling super "uncomfortable" I'd get really confused/thought loops. Everyone's different in no way am I saying this will happen to everyone, but for me it was very real.

My bad, shouldn't have assumed anything. My buddy got jumped and ended up getting his jaw broken and a mild concussion. Hasn't smoked weed since because every time he does it gives him some kind of anxiety attack. Maybe similar to your situation?

priorities on point.

glad to hear your feeling better this season though, in all seriousness

Ive had 2 concussion...one from snowboarding and it was bad. I lost memory for a week and was lost everywhere I went. But take your time, have patience, and you will definitely be back out there.

Just don't rush it. It's not worth it.

yeah deffinatly similar it was so foreign for me to feel like that, I had litterally smoked thousands of times prior to the accident never once did I have panic attacks or get all paranoid, he'll me and my buddys used to joke about how funny it was when kids would tweak out after smoking. I used to think how could someone not enjoy weed I couldn't understand how bud could make someone feel like that. It took many months and many try before I could enjoy it like I had once. I'd smoke, get anxiety, hate it, get pissed off that I couldn't enjoy something I loved so much, repeat, slowly the "bad" started fading and it gained it's charm back :). This may or may not have been a part of it but the 2 months leading up the accident I had been using mdma heavily, like once or twice a week, that isn't very good for your brain either who knows haha. Anyways my bad didn't mean to hijack ops thread. Sorry about the wall of text I'm on a phone and super lazy

First, how the hell can people not tell these posts are satirical? It's so fucking blatant.

And yeah, I agree to an extent. I personally wear a helmet but everyone and their mother has some story about how they "would have died" without a helmet.

i see it as better safe than sorry. plus the first day i wore a helmet this year after going 2 days without, i caught an edge and slammed. had i not been spooked by that, id probably been worse off today. not saying death, but not good

good thing you are alright for the most part. but all i can say from concusion experience is DONT GO TO THE DOCTOR all they will tell you is not to ski, haha ans noone wants that.

Anyone who's wondering, no I'm not kidding. I have had exercise induced migraines since i was like 10. They seem to come on if I'm going really hard or take a couple big falls, but sometimes they come on after something stupid like lifting weights.

Went to a several neurologists and they just shrug and tell me to be thankful i only get them 3 times a year and not 30.
