Slug: Maybe not the most amazing lyricist as far as rhymes go (although he still is consistently much better than Weezy) but as a storyteller he is unmatched. Some of the most meaningful, thought-provoking lyrics in hip hop.

Brother Ali: Animal. Certainly not the best I've ever heard as far as rhymes go but he's right up there, and he has an amazing flow. Also, he has great topics and raps about shit that real.

disagree about brother ali and slug and most likely always will. i love to hate those guys!but masta ace is some good shit. check out the album "slaughtahouse"as far as edo g goes, i know he repped roxbury mass and was a seminal artist from that area, but im not too up on his shit.jemini is very solid. if you can find it look for his "scar and pain EP" when he recorded under "Jemini The Gifted One". I always was a fan of his work on "Ghetto Pop Life" tracks as well.and as for j-live your best bet would be "the best part"

Have you heard "Lookin' At Me Sideways", "Truth is Here", "Take Me Home", "Self Taught"... I mean how can you hate on those tracks?
 
not my style at all anymore. don't worry though i enjoy a wide variety of artists. my favorites have to be straight out of the mid 90s east coast gritty hardcore scene. i have a penchant for the heavy hitters like lord finesse, kool g, show and ag, that type of thang.
 
and if i am looking for that "prosey" slug style, i will pick up a book for a far more articulate and enjoyable read. he does nothing but annoy me. that's just my opinion though. i know i render a lot of kids incredulous on here when i speak of slug in such a blasphemous manner haha.
 
no man, i at least agree with you on atmosphere. i don't really get the big deal with him. i do like that he plays with a live band though.
 
haha I was joking. But seriously its stupid to tell someone else the music they like sucks because music is an internal thing. It should be judged on the way you connect with it, not others. And don't get hung up on the whole underground vs. mainstream thing that takes over NS.

yeah but the thing is that too many mainstream artists actually do suck and don't deserve all the fame/money they get form sucking their record labels big phat hard-on while truely talented ones are left scrounging up enough money to put food ont heir families table at night.

haha thats cute. Honestly, its all about the hustle. Most legit/succesful artists have thrown up radio songs to make dough off of. Uhhh Biggie, no doubt, almost all his popular songs mo money mo problems, big poppa, juicy are nothing like the legit verses and raw beats in the rest of his songs. Tupac - changes, wu tang clan pretty much rza I think marketed the fuck outa themselves and made a ton of money. If legit rappers want money they gotta make some songs people can listen to in the club - hahaahahha kanye west, everyone hates but its true, nas too.

And I'm sure I feel bad for artists who don't have money. No one said you are entitled to money for being a skilled artist.

haha. you named so many mainstream artists man. that doesn't prove any point at all. anyways, no, of course i dont' pay for all my albums, i'm a college student. i ain't got shit for money. i do buy albums from smaller name artists when i can. i've bought all the sweatshop union albums i have and cali p's album for example.
 
i got this moutnain bike movie and one of the scenes used thing about it. so back when they first came out with natural progression. but any hip hop enthusiast should at least have heard of them. they got some of the best lyrics in the game.

Its getting old how every other thread in media arts is like "lil wayne and every popular artist is so lameeeee" I listen to underground hip hop. And then proceed to list a bunch of extremely popular rappers that are in ski movies and be like 'what else is good'.

Haha, I think some of the artists always mentioned on NS are good but its ridiculous to say you hate popular rappers and then list the rappers that EVERYONE ON NS LOVES. When everyone is down with underground rap its NOT UNDERGROUND. Just like good music and stop falling in line with this bullshit underground movement. 99% of rappers want to be on MTV making millions and the ones that don't say shit like "I could make millions but I choose not too"

And then to bitch out rappers who do make millions, and feel sorry for those that don't. I mean give me a break thats life. And then to not even support them by buying their albums - thats a joke.
 
no i agree with you on that. i've been over that stupid discrepancy for a while. but any time you list artists you like, i disagree with you completely. you seem to throw around a couple of names (i.e. kanye, talib) lame shit like that. you really have not demonstrated a full knowledge to me. and believe me i am the guy that you should be trying to prove that to. and stop making the money and underground vs. mainstream argument. you seem to believe you have stumbled upon the greatest revelation of the decade. just by making the argument you want to be grouped into some elite circle. but you aren't there yet. as a member of that circle, let me be the first but im sure not the last to tell you, you have a long way to go. but good luck. and if you want to talk shop with me, we can. i would love that.
 
No one should be trying to prove their knowledge of hip hop to anyone, that's a ridiculous statement. Both of us are hip hop snobs but we clearly have very different tastes within the genre. Both are legitimate, and that's how it should be with everyone.

If you like talentless hip pop that's your own opinion - enjoy. Don't come on here with Weezy's dick stuffed halfway down your esophagus trying to claim he's anywhere close to one of the greatest MCs of our time because he's not. That simple. But if you like him, fuck it, bump his shit all day and all night for all I care. I come into a lot of "these are the artists I like" type threads and post alternatives that I think are vastly better, take it or leave it, but I don't expect anyone to try and prove their knowledge of hip hop to me in order to qualify some stupid internet post.
 
im half joking, andrew haha. and i am all for bumping what you like, that's all that should matter. but you also have to respect wayne if you're going to make that claim. not that hes my favorite or anything, but some people prefer him just as you and i have our own preferences.

As for Wayne, though, the only thing I respect about him is his ability to sound like he's getting his dick sucked as he spits. Nothing he's done has impressed me except a select few beats. A very select few. Again, if that's peoples' thing I'm not here to judge, but I definitely disagree.

I understand and agree with what both of you guys are saying. But theres nothing wrong with listening to a song because you enjoy it. I would have to say that my list of favorite songs is completely different than my list of what the greatest songs are. I'm saying that if someone wants good hip-hop, that doesn't always mean the best MC, it means a song they are going to enjoy listening too.

Whatever, maybe I'm not making sense.

And yea I'm not a fan of lil wayne. His voice is very obnoxious and he rabbles on about nothing, but if you like him than you like him. Like lil wayne could be your favorite rapper and theres no problem, but if you say he is the best rapper, than theres a problem. Like kweli is probably my favorite rapper, but I would NEVER say he is the best rapper. Nas is.

who here has the song "Letter to B.I.G" by Jada? (hopefully everyone), well search the internets and download "Gumbo Pot" by Keak da Sneak. Same beat, just slowed down. Kinda ruins the feel for the tribute track to Biggie.
 
i believe "letter to Big" is on one of 9th wonders "dream merchant" cds. not sure if vol 1 or 2 though
