Hip hop - freeskiers official music/style genre?

so i wondered, why is it that hip hop is like the soundtrack of freeskiing? you go to a movie premier, and the whole evening just hip hop mixes, most professional videos and nearly all amateur stuff has the blackest shit on earth in the background while showing the whitest kids of them all: mostly rich, well-raised kids out of some suburb/mountain village

i mean, i have nothing against that, but i ski and thats what i wanna show. personally i dont like this hiphop (streetwear) style, but no skier would even think your capable of throwing a 3 if youre not wearing XXXXXXXL pants/shirts all day.

bottom line might be that i find it sad that our so-called freeski culture has nothing original to it except than the actual skis.

remember back in the day, all the movies had a way harder soundtrack to it. i dunno, maybe its just cuz i am (relatively) old, but that was the day, vinnie d, jp, jf, cr and what their names are, reppin their sport, when it was more a sport than a job/business. now all the labels push into it (which has positive aspects) and the original layer is covered by 10 Xs and one L.

thx a lot

skiing is dancing on snow

hip hop is defined as the four elements of hip hop:

"breakdancing, graffiti writing, DJing and MCeeing is an artistic commitment to seize freedom..."

it fits skiing perfectly... regardless of skin color

baggy ass clothes makes your steeze so much more legit. It hides the imperfections in your tricks, therefore it makes your tricks....perfect.

well, i admit that for the skiing part and i actually think that baggy SNOWpants are the shit, i just dont get it why the baggy-level of my streetwear determines my status as a skier.

Being a life long skier; my clothes have always been baggier than most, it not because of style or the coolest fashion it was because of comfort. I by no means hood rich or the streets last great white hope. I am a kid for a middle to upper income family from the flats. It is practical that the baggier the clothing the easier it is to conceal errors in your tricks. So i guess what i am saying is that it shouldn't be about color or race, but about comfort and convenience.

Thats sort of a ridiculous comment. I know tons of people who throw down who wear normal or tight fitting clothing.

yeah, i agree. my freind's race coach throws 3's. hes like 50, and wears tight fitting clothes

POP QUIZ:you see the following two skiers on the hill and you don't know either of them, which do you think is better?

The reason that alot of people wear baggier clothing is to make their tricks look smoother. But I really think it is all just about being comfortable and having your own style. If you like what is going on now than go ahead and follow that. If you don't, then go off and do your own thing. It does not really matter what other people think about you, except when judges are judging your tricks, so just go do your own thing and if you don't like hip hop, then dont use it. It is all up to you.

personally, i think its just because freeskiing is such a different sport from anything else, other then its counterpart snowboarding. our clothes seperate us from the other communities. now that poses another question.

why baggy shit? why not sombreros or capes?

the answer is simple. have you ever tried skating or moto with sagged clothes? its not easy(not to say some dont do it). its much more comftorable and warm skiing in bigger stuff.

I made almost the exact same thread the other day but a little more related to the selling out of skiing in general, they deleted it immediatley... we are still buying into an industry, its just a different one

I guess you could consider hip hop as the "official" music genre of freeskiing. There are however, tons of awesome videos that have some great musical variety. Hip hop has just been used extremely heavily in freeskiing videos. I personally don't really like hip hop that much, but I do think that they go great with certain movies. It's all about the context of the video that the type of music is included in.

yup. my friend josh throws the hell down on rails and he rocks the tight pant steez allllll day long.

heres a pic of him pre-bindsoul.

thats why i don't go to any premiers or shows because i probably wouldn't be able to resist the urge to start breaking faces.

seriously- I have been on NS for 5 years now with 2 accounts- and this is the 65th time ive seen this thread- who the fuck cares

plus its in the wrong forum

bitch

I cant stand most hip hop, and i think most of you all look ridiculous.
Not saying you're not good skiers, and good people. I just happen to get a lot of entertainment out of watching you.

i don't really listen to hip hop when I ski....

I used to when i was young and thought I was a thug, but then I grew up and realized that being black is not all that its cracked up to be.

I LIKE BEING WHITE.

yea, pleez get yourself "i am membernumber 90000 or whatever"-patch so you can bitch about that. i hate it when people use their "time on this site" as a validation for their arguments, but even more when they donot even care looking up if the guy that theyre actually answering to (me) is twice as long on here

#2 cuz he's got afterbangs, and skinny snowpants, and a leather jacket. he's so punk! i wanna be just like him. I'm gonna go get some skinny jeans right meoOWW!!!

I think it ultimately comes down to the segments you watch and the guys you watch with a dose of the company that made the video too.

yeah i like MSP and all, teton too, but if you look at i would say 90 % of amateur edits, i would guess some kind of jedi mind, immortal technique or whatever is on.

that was my point, obviously NOT EVERYONE will love hip hop (yes, i have sociology-class this semester) and NOT EVERY VIDEO uses it, but i guess from a statistical point of view the probability that were more a hiphop copycat culture than not is pretty good.

i did all the edits for our crew so far, in the first one (back in the day, that thing is horrible) i had iron maiden in it, in the first serious one, it was classic rock (jethro tull, fleetwood mac) and j5. and what happened? "yeah dude, sounds great, but do more hiphop, i dont like that soundtrack besides j5.

next year i looked for underground, free license stuff. had hiphop, electronica, basically i rode with the flow, except for that i didnt use mainstream stuff. and what happened? "yeah dude, its cool, i like it, but why wouldnt you use some of the jedi mind stuff i send you"

dont get me wrong, i love hiphop sometimes, but i dont like all us skiers being put in one single box (whether it is snowwear, streetwear, music or lifestyle) with the label "hiphop" on it.

/rant, and thx to the guy that posted the two pics, you are the bomb, you totally got my point and some others clearly didnt

cause hip hop has flow and so does skiing... its not about the street culture its just that their music sounds good

People should definitely quit all the 'trying to be black' stuff. If you like hiphop then listen to it. It doesnt mean you're trying to be black. The same goes for baggy clothes. People need to realise that music and clothes aren't a racial issue. Do what the fuck you want.

the hard beat with the way skiers ski now just mix in a good way. Not saying other genres of music dont flow with skiing like hip-hop does but its not as good i think.
