First off to put things in perspective, I've graduated highschool, I live in Ottawa Canada and i've been accepted to university in Nova Scotia and im pursuing my dream in history and political science. Now the opinion I don't understand and continues to humbug me is the one that a vast majority of people on NS, and in my own community hold. And that is that highschool is a complete waste of time and effort and has held no sway in the shapings of peoples futures. I disagree with this and I can't even understand the thinking behind it. Highschool has been such an influencing factor on my life I don't even understand where to begin. I guess at the start. COming out of grade 8 I wasnt the coolest kid. I was in army cadets, knew everything and didnt know how to socialize worth a damn. Highschoo lwas a cruel blow to me. My first two years I had a hard time falling into regular groups of friends, but over time, I gre up, got over it and came out of my shell. The proximity I had with so many people for so long not only broke down my awkwardness around people, but built my social skills until I was just another average grade 12 grad, heading out with everyone who i'd grown close to to get smahsed at prom and aftergrad. Above the social level. Highschool helped me focus and filter my education into a direction that suited me best. I shied away from maths and sciences cause i fucking hated them with a passion but that allowed me to focus mroe on the humanity and social science courses I enjoyed and both did well at. Lets be honest, at some points I lost focus. I drank excessively like everyone else and I was definately really big into weed until I dropped that. But throughout everything highschool definately helped to mold my direction in life. The last thing I can really go on about is how highschool helped by building my confidence in trying things. Going into grade 9 I mostly kept to myself and the one or two friends I had, but in grade 10, one of my friend introduced me to rugby. I gave it a shot and found I really liked it. I played it every year throuhgout the rest of school and also got into soccer, running and the confidence I got during those helped me get a little more involved in the school and give back by getting involved in student committees and fundraisers. The latter two really drew people closer to me and it felt unbeleivably good finding a purpose and just generally being liked for the thigns I did and the people I found myself hanging with.

Think theoretically if you'd have never gone. Some people figure that they'dve been betetr off not going. Would you rather have sat around your whole life doing nothing, wishing you'd made the attempt? I think not. On the bright side, for those of us stubborn enough to insist that highschool served no purpose, at least it took going there to figure it out, and its saved you a world of grief widnering if there could've been more.

Im not trying to change opinions, simply stating my own: Highschools greatly beneficial, and I encourage everyone whos never really done much to get involved while you can. It pays off in the end.

Oh yeah. Homework pays off too.
 
asshole. but yeah i agree with much of it. i think in high school you dont really find out who you are but you do find out who you arent.
 
highschool is something we have to do whether we lik eit or not, we dont have a choice... but the things you described are pretty much growing up and trying new things in an enviroment created by your school... nothing speacial i guess you just got more out of the experiance than others who claim it didnt have anything to do with 'real life'

your direction of studies was done pretty much by your own inclination, would have been the same anywhere else. trying rugby was probs more influenced by your friend

life is fundamentally influenced by opportunities, but mostly it comes down to your own personal choices. so start taking some credit for your growing up process. in my opinion school itself doesn't encourage people to make their own choices,they are more concerned with generic non specific education so you can make your own choices once you leave
 
good post and well composed, but we all have different experiences in high school. high school is really important in teaching kids basic lessons about problem solving, communicating, and stuff like that. my high school experience was pretty good, i didn't have to study much, was friends with pretyt much everyone and was active in lots of sports and clubs. it wasn't until i went to college where i knew absolutely nobody else that i started learning a lot more about who i am and the important things in life. personally, i think the first couple years of college have been the most important and influential years of my life. if i say high school isn't important, i guess it is just comparing it to other aspects of life.
 
interesting read jamie, i didnt know you were one of those socially awkward kids lol. i guess i could say i am too, but i blame that on not being able to hear too much.
