if you or someone you know has a nicer minidv camera, you can run from the hi8 output into the dv input, then connect the dv camera to the computer with firewire, put it on vcr mode, and the signal should go from the hi8 through the dv and into the computer. i know on a gl1 you have to press the play and pause buttons at the same time for the input to turn on in vcr mode.
