Hey! maybe moving to UT, plz help?!

.sup, nick here i am 22 yrs old from seattle, wondering if i could get some insight on the SLC/surrounding areas. I have lived in WA my whole life and i am ready to live/ski in another state. I am eurotripping this summer for a bout 2 months and will return to the US between the first-and-last-of-oct-o-ber

in a perfect world i would work full time at one of the resorts and either live on the hill or in a nearby town and be able to ski like all the time. i realize however that it's not a perfect world and i may have to resort to finding work in another fashion. I have worked in kitchens for about 5 yrs now so i know that i can always find work, but thats not the point of the move. I want to be a ski bum! I will have residual funds when i return from my trip to last me a while, even if i have to find a room for rent.

so i guess what i am asking is for; tips on good areas to look for housing, taking into consideration i want to be skiing as much as possible. which are the best resorts to visit as far as crowd/ticket value/skiers satisfaction. and what my chances are of getting work at one of the mts. (i do have mountain work experience).

any help is greatly appreciated!! thanks!
 
I moved here from WA about 2 years ago, and have definitely loved it. It is hard to say for living, but what he said above me is a good start. Just visit a few times and really explore around before you make up your mind. There are lots of good places to live around here. Just stay on the east half of the city, closer to the foothills of the mountains. It kind of gets more rundown with a big mexican diaspora as you move west, but you want to be close to the mountains for skiing anyway.
 
great, thanks! i am def more the big mo untain, powder skier...i will be applying at alta, snowbird, brighton, and solitude since those are all int eh big and little cottonwood caynons.

what do yall do for tickets/passes?? ive heard of some utah resident discount card

whats the sled-access skiing like?? thats what im most interested in

 
What kind of resort work are you looking for?

I taught ski school at Deer Valley this winter. They pay a lot. That was nice.

 
i will do whatever...ive been teaching for about 7 years, and i worked lift lines when i was like 13...my goal is to get into ski patrol because im interested in outdoor medical work for my future...i can also cook at the mountain but that would be my last choice

I just came for school from minnesota this past year and i love it here too. as he said, stay away from the mehicano areas, it gets pretty sketchy down there. Anywhere on foothill drive or sugarhouse would be like a 20 min drive to the bird. If you can end up picking, I would go bird or alta. They seem like they would get less boring to ski everyday compared to brighton or solitude.for my season pass i went through one love (the ski group at the u) but there are probably tons of ways to get discounts( like working at a resort). I worked at brighton as an assistant ski instructor (I am only 14 years old) and they gave me pay by the hour (minimum wage) and a free season pass
 
As far as living situation, Sugarhouse/slc area is going to be a tad closer to big cottonwood (brighton/solitude) where Sandy/Cottonwood Heights would be closer than that to little cottonwood (bird/alta) but they are pretty comprable either way. More stuff to do in sugarhouse/slc i feel apres ski
 
main street in park city is a fun area. definitely more expensive as it is touristy .. Sugarhouse area is pretty sweet. SUPER nice for the summer .. i would say try to find a year round lease so that you can pay about the same per month as a 6 month but can generally find a MUCH nicer place and be a lot more comfortable.

I just relocated out here a couple weeks ago and am living at the base of park city .. it costs $850 a month for me and anaother guy for our own bedrooms, but that is summer rates. probably more like 1250 for the winter a months.
 
where in PC are you? i'm in edelweiss paying $1300/month split 2 ways for a year lease. it's pretty nice up here really. PC has everything you need for day-to-day stuff but i find myself driving into SLC a decent amount for random shit that PC doesn't have. as long as you don't eat out all the time, food prices for groceries aren't bad at all.

im going to focus on trying to work at either brighton/solitude/snowbird/alta probably in that order but i will take whatever i can get. if a living arrangement at the mountain isnt possible then i will definitely be looking for a 6 month - 1 year lease arrangment...
