HEY! I can't decide which of these primes I want. Please help me

well first of all, that canon lens is an FD lens with an adapter. I can't imagine it working well with your camera. And I've never really heard of the other two. best to stick with name brand glass and glass thats actually designed for your system. Try a 50mm f/1.8 it's cheap and fast. although it's not really gonna be a 50mm on your camera, but hey. You could also get a 28mm or 35mm if you want something that ends up more along the lines of a 50mm.

Yeah I'm aware of that, I don't think it should affect performance.

And Helios is an old russian brand that I've heard good things about, and that was another lens I was considering. I'm just a little wary of the construction.

Well it most certainly will affect performance. I'm not sure how that adapter works, but I can assure you you'll probably have no electronic control of aperture or DOF preview, the metering might be screwy especially if you try to link it to a focus point, no autofocus, you probably won't be able to use auto modes well (yeah i guess you could use aperture priority), and as far as i know I'm not sure if the diaphragm sizes on the FD system and the EOS system are the same if not similar. And then the factor that you have a 1.6x crop comes in too.

there's some canon primes you might want to look at. move around on that site and you'll get to some reliable third party glass.

haha there you go. I've only ever seen a few people have great results with adapters and they were usually with zeis lenses.

fd lenses do not adapt well/at all with EOS mount. Grab a helios for sure, with an m42 adapter they work fine

get the helios. fd adapters are bad news, unless they are insanely expensive, which defeats the purpose of buying fd lenses. helios is dirt cheap, with no glass in the adapter and crazy bokeh.

you think it's better than the other 50? Like construction wise and glass wise? I have the new and have wanted a 1.4 fr awhile but it's expensive. plus a lens other than 50mm would be nice. I only have that for 35mm stuff and then an 80 and 150in medium format.

Depends on what you like. The helios has a bunch of technical flaws, but those technical flaws produce what lots of people think are great images. The bokeh gets all distorted and is beautiful IMO. The canon is technically a better lens, and the images just have a different look. The way I see it, the helios is more artsy, and the canon more technical. I might be completely wrong, having never used the canon, but that's pretty much what most people are saying.

M&A is sure going down hill.

helios'es are not very sharp lenses. Sure they give interesting bokeh, but its more of a gimicy lens to me, similar to a lens baby. Yes they have a function, but I would never choose it if I had to get just ONE lens.

Op, dont buy a helios, nor the fd 50mm, save up and buy a real 50mm 1.8 that will function perfectly with your camera. Whats a Canon 50mm 1.8? $90? Dont jump the gun like the rest of NS simply because a lens gives 'prewwty bokeh.'

Umm, yeah not going with "name brand glass" doesnt ensure that your getting a piece of shit lens. Look at the Tokina 11-16, the Tamron 17-50, hell even the Sigma 10-20. all great lens's. yes i know those arent primes, but thats not my point.

oh yes, much better. For one, the mount is made of metal, not plastic (which feels cheap imo) and the glass/optics are much better.

Go for a 24L

Except that's probably out of your budget. So, I'd look at the Canon 28mm f/1.8 because you're using a crop sensor. On a crop it will be around a 50mm. If worst comes to worst, get the normal 50mm f/1.8. It's like $90 (Cheapest lens ever) Thank me later.

It's only like $430, which is cheap for a lens... But then again it's expensive when you're comparing it to the nifty fifty.

I normally shoot with all "L" lenses :D

I'm sorry I wasted your time, master.

But more to the point, I'm not buying this lens because I need to, I enjoy the look of the helios, and kind of want one.

And I realize the 50mm 1.8 is pretty good. It's also made like a childrens toy. I vant ze strong vussian metal houzing

Whatever I feel like renting depending on the event lol. In a few months it will be

24L

50L

85L

135L

My photography hasn't paid me enough yet. But I still make profit on top of renting gear and I just started a few months ago.

Good lord, I knew I shouldn't of even tried to help you. You should probably just sell all your lenses and buy some helioses and lensbabies. They make the coolest shots.

Yeah, I've shot with both and loved them. I'll probably end up getting the 35L over the 24L though. I used the 24L a few times and started to not like it the more I shot with it.

Oh, and to Despite, helping people with photography stuff is pretty much pointless. I've come to this realization. No matter how much you tell them what's better, they'll still get what they want. For example, when you tell someone that a 20, 30, or 40D is better than a rebel, they'll still get the rebel because it has more "features" and more pixels.
