Henrik Harlaut and Vine

Hey guys. I try not to post stories in here, as they do better in NS' kick ass News section. But.... (you knew that was coming), I tried to implement Vine into a story and would appreciate any feedback. Is this cool? Does it translate/make sense?

If it does, I'll do a bunch more this summer and next winter as it's super fun to put together as opposed to the old story and photo web stories you're used to.

Skiierman!

Hey, it's a tool. You didn't even click the link, did you?

(slaps hand against forehead, shakes head)

Great interview...the text I mean. I dunno what this "seenive" is, but it doesn't work for me...maybe I'm too old.

Instagram's video service is terrible. It takes forever to load on Wi-Fi and LTE connections when you're using a phone. Also, I don't believe it loops which is necessary for reader's of all abilities and speeds.

I forgot to say that i did really like the article and how you used vine in to get some shots so it wasn't only pictures like most. I was just saying instavideo because t_rob said "vine is so may 2013"

I really liked that, gave a really nice feel for how the day you did the interview was as a whole. The vines broke up the text nicely. I really like it as a concept. Good job.

You're using vine like it's a gif. I get that.

I'd like it better if the articles had real gifs instead of whatever #iphoneonly, #htconly, or hashtag whatever you're into. Yeah, vine is quick and easy but I think to really make this work, you should go all the way. You can make 30fps gifs, it's just going to take a lot effort.

Starting with a t2i with a glidecam or whatever can do so many more things than the #(insertphonenamehere)only and I think that'd be so much sicker and more versatile. All of the sudden, you could have big mountain gifs and be able to do the same type of article with BC/BM skiers and show videos of jumps that are bigger than 10 feet.

Yeah, it'll take more time to film with a camera, import, maybe color correct, shrink, and gif that shit manually but you could create an automated sequence to speed up that process so really only the first few times making it would suck.

Do that! Real gifs would be really awesome.

I really like how you used a short video (vine) instead of a picture. I think mixing in a few stills and only 1 or 2 vines would be great. That way the Vines might seem more pronounced on the page? IDK, but what I do know is the article was great, good shtuff.

I was thinking like heybelinda. That lag was terrible when I opened grantland and it wasn't until I just opened an image by itself that I saw it smooth. If that kink could be fixed I think it's the best route.

Pretty cool. Is there a way the videos could only start if your mouse is over them or something. Anyways its pretty cool but when theres one vine on top of the other they both play at the same time so if you were to put 3 in a row it would be pretty hectic

no not like that. stay with what you did in the edollo article, vine worked fine, thoes gifs lagged to hell and were waay too choppy. i enjoyed the article and the filming you had. solid 9/10

Vine does not function well with chrome, a lot of people use chrome so that's one problem.

Also autoplay pisses a lot of people off, & how does it apply on mobile? if it's autoplay there it'll just slow phones.

i like the idea. You can tell that was a trial article by the wanting vids but it still adds a little extra that is nice. Can you make the videos play once you scroll past a certain point? Call me old but I hated the constant flashing surrounding the text. I seem to remember some videos in the NY Times/Elyse Saugstad article that didn't play until you scrolled the player into the center of the screen.

i really liked it. its really nice just being able to see a quick shot of him skiing without having to play a video or waiting on a big gif to load. plus they look good and loop. i think it really helps you get into the article.

on insta-video, i love/hate it. i love the idea of seeing cool stuff in my feed, but hate it because it never ever loads. i've sat my phone down just to see how long it takes, and i've waited over 5 minutes before giving up. and thats on a good wifi connection.

I really like this idea and how you pulled it off. It gives the skiers much more of a human feel. These dudes are just skiers, they don't need dramatic filming/editing to prove that.

Well done Rogge

This^^^

I was very surprised you included that. Henrik might have to watch his back from the PC police if he gets any more famous. Treading a very touchy subject.

Anyway I think this is THE future of interviews. It can be utilized in so many different ways as mentioned above (sampling parts of the interview, vids of campers, lifestlye vids, follow cam) . Loving the idea, it gives incredible context to the reading...many props. Hope to see a lot more of this.

No they aren't. Gif's have no sound, part of what makes vine videos awesome. That's like saying eheath could just use a collection of gifs instead of making an edit...
