HELP with DELL!!!!!

My desktop Dell which has windows XP won't boot up. It keeps giving me this message...

'No Boot Device Detected: System Halted'

Then it goes through and counts up how much ram it has. I have no idea whats goin on with it, I'm thinkin viruses in the bootup directory thing??

If anyone knows how I can fix this I would really appreciate it because I just finished my college essay question for my application and its on my dell computer.

 
something is screwed up in your booting sequence. You need to go into BIOS and see what got changed.

Right when you try to turn it on do you see the dell logo on the screen?

press and hold escape once you do. That should take you into BIOS. You should then be able to see where the problem is. Usually it has to do with a hard drive being screwed because of a virus.

Just the screen that counts up the ram but has a dell logo in the corner shows up. I held escape but it didn't work.

 
Thanks utah, but it ended up being one of my memory cards was bad. Thanks to dell support they guided me to the problem by having me take apart my computer. It only took an hour of being on the phone.

 
i fucking hate my dell. i've had nothing but problems, i haven't even had it for a year. I had my hewlett packard pavillion for 3 years and it was flawless, it just didn't have enough space and it was kinda slow. no problems at all. my new dell is a shitbomb

yah overall dell=shitass bitch assjob computers. Although my moms dell laptop has been fine for a year, our desktop has been givin me trouble for the past year.

Which is why I'm buying an apple powerbook soon.

 
my gateway case + my everythingonlineandstuffpoopandstuff is awesome. only problem ive had is with viruses. ive boughten like 4 harddrives in the past 4 years, but it beats payin $400+ for a new computer.

to get into the bios dells usually use the f2 key before the dell logo goes away from the screen... just go to the boot sequence and make usre you hard drive is the primary boot device and first on the list..... i build computers for fun PM me if you need any more help

on a list in the new york times of ways to avoid spyware / viruses etc, the number one way was to get a macintosh. they are by far the best and simplest computers made, they have the least problems out of any statistically, and no one hacks macs. Plus, not all of us are fortunate enough to be compyuter wizards like you and build our own hardcore computers.

macs are slow and most software is designed for pc's plus to get a really fast mac you have to spend mucho amounts of money.... and to stop spyware and adware stop looking at so much porn and just run spybot and adaware every couple of days

well, it came down to dropping $1200 of cash i don't have on a new computer that i would build myself, or spending the $300 to buy a slightly slower comupter off a guy who needed $300 to finish off his custom computer.

dell: p4, 2ghz, 768mb ram, and an 80gig HD.

anyway, my old dell, (pIII 650mhz, 256 ram) ran SOLID for 6 years. basically going through a fresh windows install every 2 years worked wonders for that computer. and my new dell is just as nice, as i installed my own copy of winXP pro, as opposed to the dell branded shit.

that's the real key is to NOT use the dell supplied OS.

Seriously, most dells you see are shiot, because most dells you see are 300 dollar peices, kinda like e-machins. e-machines are great if you dont like your mainboard much. you get what you pay for. both make good computers, but not for 300-400 dollars

i built my own computer, its really not that hard. i mean, ya, without a class i couldnt do it, but i took one class, and i built my own, runs great. if you are looking at new computers, it is definately worht the time to check it out. it saves money, and the know how is great to have in todays world.

building your own machine is definitly the way to go, but if you don't have time or the will to do it, I highly recommend cyberpowerpc.com. I personally know about 9-10 people who have ordered from them, all successfully. if you don't know what components to pick for your system, just ask your local computer geek, they will be happy to show off their geekdom knowledge.

I broke 3 consecutive powercords for my inspiron laptop and the 3rd one shorted out my computer....so they gave me a new one, that was pretty sweet.

 
no its a laptop and the spot where the powercord ocnnects to the computer broke off. Since the laptop is always moving and the cords are made like crap all the bending and constand direction changes eventually breaks the wires (bend metal, it weakens) The first 2 times my cord just stopped work the the third time the break didnt go all the way through, it resulted in an internal spark which melted the rubber on my word and when the wire came through the rubber it hit the metal table the computer was sitting on shorting out the computer and making the computer smoke like abitch, thats how

I called tech support twice and both times I got an Indian women/man who I couldn't understand and didn't fix my problem. The women helped me find a bad memory card but I still had to bring the dell to a computer repair guy.
