Over the past year ive become increasingly interested in filming an editing. When watching a ski edit or any visual media i always notice the cinematography, and how it was edited/shot.

This year I took a comm tech course at my school that involves aloot of filming an editing and i can firmly say that i really enjoy doing it and would definetly like to further pursue it.

When it comes to filming and editing im still definetly a beginner. Ive learned alot of film theorey in terms of angles and types of shots but have not had much of an opprotunity to put these techniques into practice. I also have alloot of ideas but like i said, i havnt been able to try them out.In terms of editing the only editing program ive learned is adobe premiere 7 but ive reacently downloaded adobe premiere cs5.5 on my computer (i know its a giant leap from premiere 7) in hopes of self teaching my self how to use it using tutorials.

Anyywways. What would be a good beginner camera. Ive been looking at gopro hero 2 because of its price and versatility (because id definetly want to be filming skiing) but im worried that it might not be so good for filiming non skiing things...? like if i ever end up trying a short film or something like that. Im wondering if there are better alternatives to the gopro but at that price ($300)

Thank you!

there's a sticky thread you should use, it just makes it easier to see all your criteria. just copy paste it then fill in your relevant info

1) What is your budget? How much money can you spend right away, and do you think you can get more money to invest in the future?

A: Current budget is around $300, definetly could invest in the future.

2) What experience do you already have with cameras? Have you ever even used one before? Have you helped your friend out with his camera? Have you owned your own?

A: not much experience, ive used them a few times for edits for school but thats about it. Never for personal projects.

2) What gear, if any, do you currently have? (tripod, old camera lenses, mics, etc)

A: non-hd camera from like 2005.

4) What are you planning to shoot and how do you want to use your camera? Are you going to use this with the sole purpose of shooting skiing? or do you think you might try other stuff as well (movies, documentaries, short films, etc)

A: I plan to be shooting skiing but i MIGHT try other projects like short films

5) Do you want a camera that you can hand to your friends, that could or could not have film experience, and let them shoot you? or will you be doing all the filming?

A: Id like something that my friends could use yes.

6) When filming skiing, how do you tend to shoot? (follow cams, leave it on record on a tripod and hike, film from a tripod, etc)

A: Ive never done it but id probably be using a variety of shots. Follow cams, tripod shots, stablizer shots etc

7) What computer do you currently have/use to edit (if not currently editing, what would you most likely use)? If you can provide specifics, such as hard drive space, RAM, processor size, that would be great.

A: Compaq CQ42 notebook pc, 3GB RAM, 64-bit operating system, 2.20 ghz processor

7) What program do you currently edit on? How familiar are you with it (1- just learning; 10- I can make tutorials and know the keyboard layout)

A: I have Adobe premiere cs5.5 and on a scale of 1-10 im about a 1

I think all the info needed is in the paragraph he wrote. A gopro really isn't a real video camera. You won't be able to use it for anything besides skiing. If you think you want to do that, save up and get a canon hf200 and a tripod

Ive thought it over a little bit and kind of realized that maybe a dslr with hd video would be a better option seeing as im pretty interested in photography aswell. Any DSLR's that have a good video reputation aswell?

TO ALL NEWCOMERS IN THREAD....FORGET THE $300 BUDGET*****

I took about 10 min of research to realize that im slightly retarded for thinking i would get something decent for that.

Just recommend good starter cams that shoot 1080p video and that would still be alright as my skills progress.

Panasonic TM700

manfrotto 701hdv head and 190 legs

rode videomic

a wide angle lens if you're into that

That's what I would recommend for a starter setup.
