My gf and I are going to travel around the west this year and do a bunch of skiing

I’m well rounded in backcountry skiing

but she is a snowboarder (advanced)

she doesn’t have a split board

do you think it would be ok for her to use shoe shoes to access the side country at snowbird, Jackson’s hole, big sky etc

ps yes I have shovels beacons probes and snow safety training

Snow show with heel risers are a must. But yes, you can get about the same access with snow show than with any touring setup.

I called snow bird and they said they consider snow shoes as uphill travel which isn’t allowed there, dumb

but big sky, grand targhee and j hole said they were ok

wondering now if Brighton will allow them for side country access

Seems like she is a novice in the BC by your description

Does your GF have snow safety training?

Would you trust her to be able to dig you out if shit hit the fan?

Do you think she has the ability to tell you (a significant other she might be trying to impress) when she is truly uncomfortable?

Do you feel your the type of rider who will respect her opinion of the conditions your riding or you gonna be macho to impress her and belittle her opinion?

These are all questions you should be asking about your riding partner in the sidecountry or backcountry.

Regardless of man or woman, or what level. And it’s fine if your skill level is different. The big point is talk about it and make plans.

The fact your on NS or TGR asking if your idea seems smart or good tells me , NO you fucking idiot.

just enroll in a snow safety trip with your GF. Maybe you find out she hates snowshoeing.

Yeah she did a snow safety course with me

she’s been heli and cat skiing with me

I’m just trying to see if using snow shoes for lift access side country was acceptable Because I haven’t seen it much

i.e. I have no snowboard friends

also we are from New England

and when I skin nh she uses snow shoes

just wondering if some snooty Utah patroller was going to be angry when she pulls shoes out of her bag and starts trekking lol

sure. someone can use shoes wherever there's a skin track, some will get pissed but so what. also, most people don't skin on the south side of jackson...

It would be doable but I would recommend against because I think it could be an extremely frustrating experience for both of you and it could end up really ruining your vacation if it blows up into an argument on the skin track. (If you tour with her on snowshoes all the time and she keeps up just fine ignore this entire reply)

Here’s my thinking:

snowshoes are clunky and slower than skins in my experience so you will almost always be waiting on her which will be frustrating for both of you.

she will have to carry the board or the snowshoes which is more weight and bulk on her which will further slow her down

carrying snowshoes in the pack or on the outside kinda sucks either way

skins glide and snowshoes don’t which will make her downhill either change over to the board then back or snowshoe downhill which is way slower and less efficient than you

Personally I think you should try and find a used split board in her size and surprise her with it

All inbound touring is prohibited in north america. Some side country area are only accessed by touring. Each resort has its policy. Make sure sure to read up on them

b right on

snowbasin

the beav and eagle point all allow uphill travel with certain restrictions

all are in utah

in north america

Thank you guys for the helpful advice I’m going to look for a split board for her

If you find something don’t hesitate. We only live once.

Buying my now wife a split board was one of the best decisions I've made.

But she wont need it off the south side of the resort in JH

Is this a joke

wdym by all inbounds touring is banned in North America almost every place now has an uphill policy or even a dedicated uphill route

I think it really just depends on how much skiing in the resort side country vs pure backcountry you are going to do. If you're mainly looking at side country at those resorts you won't need to invest in a split board.

Jackson and Snowbird have mainly boot packs in the side country. Other resorts nearby like Brighton and Targhee are similar. Keep in mind Brighton and Targhee also allow uphill travel but it depends on what time and the daily conditions.

If you are keen to tour the Wasatch/Grizzly or Teton Pass instead then yeah a split board would be better.
