Alright I dont know why or how but as of right now my laptop will not boot windows.

I turn on my laptop, screen comes up asking if i want to start windows normally or if I want to run some fixing thing. So I try both. starting it normally brought me to the windows screen where its loading user accounts and shit, but not on the user account page. than it goes black and wont do anything. the fix it thing tries to run system restore but i have no previous dates set (stupid on my part, i know)

Im running Vista with 4 gigs of ram and a 250 gig HD with about 8 gigs left.

Anyone with any suggestions, please throw em out there. Im running in safe mode right now and it sucks balls.

So ya, help me please :)

My XP laptop automatically sets restore points every day (and I didn't have to set it to do so). Does Vista not do that?

when i was running xp mine never did by default. yours probably is because you set it or something of the sort.

Copied/Pasted from http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial143.html

System Restore points are automatically created when the following actions

occur:

  • When you install a new application or driver.

  • When you uninstall or install certain programs.

  • When you install new updates

  • Automatically on a daily interval

  • By manually creating one.

  • If you choose to use system restore to restore to a previous restore point,

system restore will create a new restore point prior to restoring a previous

state in case something goes wrong. If you restore to a previous state in

Safe Mode, a restore point will not be created for the current state.

So my only guess is that maybe you're not going to the correct location for System Restore? The above link gives a good description of what to do if the computer works in safe mode. It should be in Accessories < System Tools < System Restore.

is that for xp only? becuase right now its not letting me. check it:

No, it's for Vista too. But that's messed up. Your computer should be automatically creating restore points. That's not something you can usually change the settings to opt-out of either. Was the other option at startup (other than "start Windows normally") the recovery console?

haha, ya i tried startup repair yesterday and nothing. im kinda pissed, i depend on my laptop for everything haha

First, get an external to get that 200 gigs of shit off your computer so it runs faster,

Next, get your system disk, and boot from CD. I'd recommend completely reformatting your hard drive, but you shouldn't have to. Other than that, I dunno. Good luck.

^ thats what im gonna do

I have a question about backing up though

When I back up my shit, including my program files, willl i just have to drag the program file folder back onto my laptop in the program files folder and the program will work again, or will i have to reinstall all my shit?

You'd probably have to reinstall most of your programs which kinda sucks, but I did it and I'm fine without 90% of the programs I used to have haha.

thanks for all the help guys! I appreciate it.

how exactly does this work? i guess i could check google but ill waste your time instead :)

this shit happened to me

1. vista sucks (not saying you suck)

2. i found if you have alot of ram everything works fine thats how i solved this problem
