Help BC locals.... schools and skiing.

It's been a long time dream of mine to move to BC and get some real skiing in. Next year that will become a reality. Problem is I have no idea where to go. I'm done my university, but my GF who I will be living with will be going to school.

So criterion 1: Need a school near by.

I've been looking into schools for her and UBC seems like a good option in the future, but for now we think the plan may be college that has an easy enough 2nd year transfer to UBC. Any recommendations?

Criterion 2: Fuffilling my dream.

I need some killer skiing. Always had Whistler in mind as the defacto standard, but I am definatly open to other ideas. Some killer steeps, pow and knarley terrain are the main things im looking for but a decent park would be nice as well.

Criterion 3: I need a good job.

I have a B.Comm and a B.Sc. in economics, so i'm hoping to find a good paying job (50k+) in my feild. I have some management experience as well. Where is the job market good?

Recmmendations? Thanks for any help.

Probably shokld have mentioned that. She's pretty flexible because she doesn't have anything set in stone that she wants to do. She's thinking something 'businessy' i.e. management, finance, accounting,hr,etc, etc. But if there are any good college programs she would probably be willing to stick with that if thay have a good track record of getting employment.

possibilities1 theres a new school insquamish aparently, so that puts u really close to whistler2interior, ubc okanagan in kelowna, gives u good skiing at bigwhite/silverstar, and a 2 hour drive to revelstoke3some school in vancouver, lots of diff universities and colleges, 1.5-2 hours from whis

Ding, Ding, Ding!

It will be super easy for her to transfer and Big White is pretty sick.

kamloops for sunpeaks (TRU) or Kelowna for UBC-O. and im pretty sure the grad certificate just says ubc so thats pretty sweet.

why is she going to school if she doesn't really care about what she's taking? waste of money and time by the sounds of it.

big white doesn't have the terrain, but it had a good park... for as far as kelowna goes.

selkirk college has a campus in Castlegar and Nelson, with Red and Whitewater nearby. Red has an OK park and killer terrain, Whitewater as far as I know has no park... maybe a handful of rails? but the terrain (although not as big as Red for inbounds) is killer, and they get more snow than Red.

rocky mountain college (or whatever it's called) has a campus in Fernie and Golden (and Cranbrook?) Fernie doesn't have a park, RCR is really lame, and I advise you boycott them, but Golden (Kicking Horse) had killer terrain and they have a park, but I have no idea what it's deal is.

and jobs... not sure how many jobs are available in the Kootenays, but who knows...

Thanks for the detailed reply.

And as for the school thing, shes taking general studies this year, by next year she will be doing something specific.

Ya, i would deffinetly sudgest moving to nelson and going to Selkirk College or to Rossland if theres a college there. Reason being is that nelson has amazing powder and some of the best backcounty acess any where and red mountain has some of the most gnarly and fun terrain in all of B.C. Also RCR is incredibly lame (so much so I did boycot them and did not purchase a pass this year) so i wouldnt sudgest either fernie or cranbrook (although Fernie is a amazing resort). Kicking horse is superb but Im not sure if they have a college or not but they do have a park.
Job wise Im also unsure of the employment oppertunity in the kootenays. For job oppertunities and a decent ski hill i would sudgest penticton. They have multiple lakes with beaches and they have apex ski resort which has a nice park and good terrain.
good luck hope this helps

Any input on this plan:

Live: Vernon

School: Oakanagan College, maybe transfer to UBC-O later

Ski: silverstar regularly (20km away), and ski Rev as much as possible

Work: pretty good opportunity in the Vernon area

This seems like my fav option so far.

Or would Nelson be better?

FOR ALL: Golden has a College of the Rockies, it offers many courses, and correspondant courses through universities and other schools.

Kicking Horse has a park, I rate it a 5. 2 medium jumps, 2 rails, 3 boxes, a butter box and some barrel jibs. If you want jumps, build them up, plus plenty of natural terrain to play around in.

perfect choice would be to move to kelowna a growning city tones of oportunities. plus an hour away from big white an hour away from silver star. 2 1/2 away from revi and half a days drive to whistle,r red mountain, and the monashee mountain range. also a really nice small resort 3 hours away is phenix mountain.

i skied at phenix mountain onece this year somthing like 14 runs one tbar and some nice steeps, and i was the only one there othere then the lifties on a 40 cm powder day

yea phoenix is a pretty decent place for it's size. nice little day lodge, small t-bar with some rolling runs and their park is better then Red Mountain's. Went there for their rail jam with a bunch of Rosslanders and we all agreed that it was awesome.

Thanks everyone for the input. For the moment i'm pretty settled on Kelowna or Vernon.
