So i have a New York State enhanced drivers licensee. I'm pretty sure it will allow me to travel from vermont to Canada and back with no problems, but i've never been out of the country before and just kind of scared that something will go wrong. I don't have a passport as i assumed the EDL is an alternative for land travel.
Can anyone please verify if an EDL will be all I need to travel to and from Canada without any issues? Thanks guys!

NS is not a good place for law/legal advice. Go to the canadian border/immigration website and look. Or call your local canadian consul.

while you're thinking about it, you should get yourself a passport anyways, it's good for 10 years and it takes a few weeks to get so you'll be covered in the future

yes, the whole point of the EDL is so that you can travel between canada and the USA trouble free, my friend has one, but does not have a passport and he crosses the border (for his work) at least 2-3 times a week both ways.

You're good to go to canada with the EDL.

If you do have more questions about it the people to call are, Customs and Border Protection and if they can't help you call the Department of Homeland Security.

The length of time it takes to get the EDL is the reason i didn't get to go to canada this summer...

??? dude i got my EDL in a week simply because it's cheaper than a passport and im not traveling anywhere by air in the future anyway.
But thanks to the guy above who mentioned michigan. That's all i needed to know is that it does work efficiently. thanks Guys! +Karma

not anymore. at least as a canadian you cant. would be really surprised though if the americans were allowed to their birth certificate and canadians cant.
