I'd like to take nice pictures, but first i need an slr. I am planning on going with the cliche Canon rebel 2000, smart decision or useless plunder?

well patrick this camera i have now is really old and it kicks ass and it's really easy to use, has an slr and it is awesome, f stop and shutter speed right there, internal light meter (essential) and it takes sweet pictures, especially with B & W film.

dude if you talking about the school's pentax cameras, they lack a motor drive which uhh sucks...that means no sequences

mine is a little bit newer than the school cameras and i only use this one for photos which i wouldn't want to sequence, like cool shots of stuff, not skiing, for that kind of thing i have a different camera.

Whats your budget dude?

Cause you should try go for the next model up...I dunno what its called in America, but in NZ its the EOS300.

Neither have very fast winding speed...so if you want sequences..forget it. I think the EOS300 is only like 1.5fps.

Apart from that it's a pretty sweet camera for it's price...Im getting one tomorrow.

What gravity?

Unless you have a camera that shoots 4 or more frames per second, sequences look terrible. The real reason pro photo guys have fast motor drives is so they can take a few pictures each trick to capture the best shot they can, not for sequences.

that camera will be fine for most everything. i shoot with a nikon n70 and it kicks ass. i think i'm going to upgrade to a faster camera, and use the n70 as a back up. but the photos should be good. it depends if you are good at taking photos.

DO Not buy the Rebel, get the next model up, or better yet get a oldschool manuel focus body, and spend your money on the optics, cause that is what matters the most

hmmm. need to start shooting skiporn

Canon is a better body than Nikon, I still stand by that statement. As for going manual, its ok to start but if you invest in optics dont go buying stuff 20 years old. Cause when you do decide to move up to a better set up the lenses wont match. If you just want to learn, get a plain little camera and get to know how to shoot before you buy a camera with a million features you wont understand. Most people have such overkill with their bodies. Nothing is funnier than some kid shooting with a thousand dollar body, having a 150 dollar off brand piece of crap lens, and no flash low light conditions shooting multipurpose film. Get into it then worry about upgrading or spending serious cash.

A brave man will not live forever but a coward will never live.

yeah i've been shooting for awhile on my digital camera and i know about like film speed and stuff like that, i called myself a camera idiot but i do know a little

the best way to do sequences is off of video. you just need a way to get it from video to computer.

I have the rebel 2000, it works well for me, but like others have said you are going to want to get a better lens, and learn all about how to use your SLR, if you have the cash go for the models above the rebel, but i work for a living. The rebel has a nice combonation of idiot proof settings, and the capabillity of shoot with a more professional style. That is just my opinion, it's your money.

the thing about sequences is wrong, a still camera will always produce better results than video. and why do you want a film camera? just get a better digi cam

Resolution on Digi camera's, no matter what top dollar you spend, just uisn't going to produce as good a photograph as a film camera. Plus, film camera is a totally unique aspect of photography dude.

I used to totally agree with the above comment about the quality of film vs. digital. Last weekend at Snowjam Toronto a buddy of mine had a Digital SLR. It uses a 6 megapixel CCD and the results were incredible. After seeing those shots I am starting to rethink getting myself a digital SLR. They're super expensive at the moment but the money saved on film might balance that a bit. Anyways I still love film, but digital is an option now if you have the cash.

If you read the post above yours, he says that digital is still never the quality as a film camera, and it doesn't matter how much you spend on a digital camera, they just aren't worth the money.

well i'm definately getting film, i'mg going to be developing some of my own shots, and i don't have the money for a digital slr, and i don't know how fast digital slrs can shoot to, like i am under the impression they can't shoot very fast especially at like 6 mega pixels, i dunno

One of the mags from last year had a review on pro level shutters. I'll see if I can dig it up. I think it was Freeskier? I'll try to find it and get back to you.

now digital is catching up with film for resolution, once you reach a certain point the eye can't tell between the two different high resolutions. it's more the colours, film has an infinite number of colours where digital doesn't.

I haven't seen the results of a digital SLR yet, but regular digital point and shoots are complete shit.

Go with either Nikon, Contax, Yashica. Those are the only kind I have used so I cant say anything about Canon, Pentax. But stay away from Minolta.

Make sure you get a good lens like has been said, Zeiss are good if you have a Contax or Yashica, but they are expensive, Yashica lenses are good too.

Nikon makes good lenses too. I would go with manual focus just cause you learn what to really do, how to set up the whole shot, those auto focus, auto this and that shit, all you do is press the button, there is no creativity with those.

Well, my intentions were good. I was going to find the article, but i couldn't get my hands on it.

I'm running a old Nikon FG. It is old, but i's got everything that it needs, and I have a really good newer lens on it. So it works pretty damn good. I don't know jack shit about newer cameras tho and what's good.

Shane_McWannabe, just curious, but why do you say stay away from minolta? I have a minolta xg-9, kinda old minolta, its a manual slr, but it works really well for me. Is it just the new bodies?

you can do anything with a digital picutre, you can make it look exactly the same as film. You guys keep shooting film, and wasting money on every shot, wondering if it looked good or not.

Fuck that, no digital is up to film. Why do you think professionals shoot with film, because it is better, You can't get quality enlargements with digital, and you can't change exposure/light settings to get the shot to look how you want.

Hey nebratu, I've just heard tha Minolta are bad, I personally don't have any bad experiences with them, I have never used one. I've just heard from people that they are not the quality of other SLR's.

phrosty shut up you can do anything with film that you can with digital

While digital cameras are catching up with film, atm it's like apples and oranges.

The convenience of digital is also it's downfall. Like if you're travelling, and you have a digi. What happens when your memory card runs out? No more photos. And very few photoshops can process digital media.

And the cost is really expensive. Especially for the high MP ones, and even more for SLR digital cameras.

And to the dude that was going on about how digital cameras are so high that you can't tell the difference between digi and film. Uhh.. like.. that is so wrong.

Digi goes on pixels. Eg. You if you have a camera which takes 800x600 photos, and your computer screen is set at 800x600..then that photo will take up the whole screen.

As far as actually putting digi stuff onto paper. The size of the print and how good the printer determines quality... not how good the CCD is in the digicam.
