Helmet Talk

I'm in the market for a helmet. Never had one before, but I figure it's the safer thing to do... never know when you'll need one and when you do need one it'll be too late. Kinda like air bags.

So I have a few questions. What are the differences between low end and high end helmets? What causes prices to fluctuate from $30-$200?

What safety features are available? Which are MUST haves?

What are added features that make it flashy? i.e. audio/headphones

What is a low cheap helmet/brand I should avoid?

What is a moderate helmet/brand that is a blend of affordability/good features?

What is the best helmet I can get if I had all the cash in the world to spend?

Plenty of +K to pass around for you guys here.

Thanks!

Poc receptor bug. One of the best helmets out there, can take multiple knocks unlike others and still hold it's integrity! Works well with most goggles, good venting, great fit and looks good too! Definitely worth checking it out!

depends what you're after. they all comply with regulations so they're all safe (except for some 'sandbox' helmet but they tell you its not compliant anyway).
the giro g10- there's a reason why this is the single most popular helmet in the world. its extremely safe and looks good. very comfortable too.
personally i have the giro shiv. i love my g10 but i wanted a park style helmet. the shiv is significantly lighter than the g10 but as i said it complies with the regulations, and its designed for park riding. it was $100 at aspen last feb. dont know if the price has changed since then.

Best but expensive: POC Receptor, Sweet Rambler
Midrange good value: Giro shiv, Smith holt,
Cheap single impact: RED HiFi, TSG fly,
there are tons of others, but these are a few off the top of my head, all comply with the same safety regulations, except the POC and Sweet are Type B, the rest are only Type C.
hope that helps!

Lots guys at my local hill like the Smith helmets like the Holt. I myself think gonna pick up a POC Recepter Bug.

Poc receptor is pretty sick, good fit and nice whit my crowbars. The smith maze is nice and light as fuck. I have a red trace and a giro g10 . I love my g10, dont need to pu a beanie under and its comfy. Just go to you local shop and try all the helmet.

Bern makes some solid helmets, just make sure you get an EPS foam one and not a Hardhat as Hardhats don't meet safety regulations.

i would get a medium giro shiv they are pretty cheap, perfect for wearing beanies under, can handle quite a few dings and its steezy.
all around a good helmet

smith maze is the lightest certified helmet, people cant beleive how light it is when i show it to them but im not sure how well it will take a hit. when i know im most likely gonna try a new trick that would in a chance of me eating shit then i put on my tried and true giro g10

Thanks for all your responses. I've got it narrowed down to either a Giro 10 or a Poc Receptor Bug.

Pros/Cons guys?

What makes the Poc worth 2.5 times more expensive than the Giro? Is it only because of the multiple impacts?

I think both of them will last a really long time. I landed directly on my head from 25 feet and the g10 helmet didnt show any signs that that it was unusable, I still had to take the ambulance but it held up. I still replace my helmet regardless of what kind or what type it is after a bad fall cuz you cant fix ur head like bones. Some companies even have a replacement deal where you send it in one time and get it replaced for free.
