Heel lifting out of binding? (pivots)

Pretty much know jack shit about the mechanics of bindings. When I flex my right ski, I can really feel my heel lifting up and can see my break beginning to deploy. When I come back down on my heel, I can feel the boot lock back into place and can see my break come back up. This does not happen on my left ski. I have another pair of pivot 14s (these are 12s) and never noticed this. I have the dins on 10 so I can’t imagine it’s cause they’re too low. In the video below, I’m not even flexing them that hard… wouldn’t be enough to Nollie. These are brand new skis and we’re just mounted. It’s a new corporate shop that bought my old mom and pop store that I used to trust. Any thoughts?

This is built into the mechanism of pivots. The elasticity everyone talks about - that’s what you’re seeing. It’s also why people complain about brakes ripping off when landing really hard switch.

No cause for concern.

Im not an expert on this but i would be surprised if this is how pivots are supposed to behave.

that play in ops rear binding would mess with my head. Also op said its only happening to one binding, not both.

french engineering… meh

Hmm, that doesn't look right. There's too much movement when you aren't exerting that much force on your binding. How is your forward pressure? When you put your boot into the binding, the end of the little white indicator should lie between the two black tabs like this

If it looks like this, then the forward pressure is too low, which would explain why they're loose.

This link has a good guide if you need to adjust them (scroll down to Rossi FKS Binding adjustment)

nice post [tag=276406]@BrandoComando[/tag]

I will add it looks like the heel piece is lifting off the ski, is it screwed in tight?

Pretty ghetto forward pressure indicator desu…

You’re right. I didn’t read or watch well enough, I was just glancing.

Yeah it does on second glance. The baseplate shouldn’t be lifting as it’s screwed directly into the ski. Those back two heel screws for the brake are maybe a bit loose

I appreciate everyone's input and links to resources. My white indicators are nowhere near the black tabs (I read [tag=14782]@Oetk[/tag] 's TGR link about ignoring the indicator as well). Definitely looks like my forward pressure is way too low. Might have to tweak it on my own. Just terrified of a pre-release as that's how a buddy of mine destroyed his collar bone two seasons ago

If you feel capable, it's an easy fix to do yourself. The TGR forum is a great resource.

Another option is to bring the skis and boots back to the shop and explain the situation. A capable supervisor should know that their techs fucked up. Bindings are a big liability for shops and they take that stuff seriously. They'll make it right with you.

Word, if this were my previous shop I'd definitely bring them back. This new big chain store does things differently. A bit hesitant as all of their workshop services are not done in house - they ship all of their skis/boards needing mounts, repairs, tunes, etc. to their central warehouse. Pretty whack concept, but makes sense from a corporate standpoint I suppose. Regardless, I'll stop by and see what they say.

Again, I appreciate the advice!

I just looked at this (without being half asleep ha). It’s definitely your forward pressure. Basically, it’s not snug enough against your heel so there’s play that’s allowing your heel to lift because pivots are kinda weird like that with their movement. Hopefully you get it sorted but most shops shouldn’t have any issues with it.
