Headwall ripped out at Jackson

At around 9:30, the Headwall ripped out at Jackson, blowing out windows of the restaurant near there. Luckily, everyone is ok... two patrollers were burried, but dug out. CRAZY!!!! Luckily, it looks like the gondi wasn't open to the public yet. Otherwise, this would have been devastating.

kinda a noob question but how did it manage to blow out the windows? like the snow actually hit the restaurant or...

?

Had some freezing rain and hail type shit yesterday afternoon. Mostly wet, heavy snow as of when I was at the Village this morning. Super shitty.

posted in the other thread too, but here's the first official release:

(Jackson Hole, Wyoming, December 29,

2008) At approximately 9:30 am this morning, after JHMR Ski Patrol had

completed one avalanche hazard reduction route and were getting ready

to conduct another, the Headwall slid naturally from the southeast

aspect above the Bridger Restaurant.

This incident took place before this area of the mountain had been

opened to the public. A search for potential victims took place and

everyone has been accounted for.

This incident is under full investigation and a more detailed report will be released at 4:00pm MST.

At this time JHMR will remain closed until further notice.

HOLY SHIT, were people working in the restaurant and stuff? And here I was bummed that I wasn't out west to make a trip to jackson...

Friend just texted me that Casper, Cheyennne and Laramie Bowls all ripped, too, shortly after the Headwall went. Guess we'll be starting all over on the November crust unless of this slid to the ground.

This god damn weather cycle the last 2 weeks has fucked up snow conditions around the entire us. To much snow falling, to warming temps with still MORE snow falling, then mixes of rain, freezing rain, more snow, more warm temps on top of a layer of freshly fallen snow and you got some shitty ass conditions.

Inbounds avy's are really scary too. Good thing no one was hurt.

wild, stay inside for another week. all of the steeps (aside from the high t) in alta have been closed i guess. the new snows gotta settle for a while and heal whats underneath. what sucks the most is the avalanche reports are saying the snows going to get more stable, and people are going to start going for the bigger slopes, and will probably get in trouble.

Nothing in our report is showing anything about it getting more stable. I think we're on terminal high!

Bummer if that's the case around Alta with all those weak layers.

well if they ripped out to the crust, and it actually stops snowing, cant people ski off the crust and maybe get some better snowpack when it starts falling again?

The new snow will just pile up on that crust layer to screw us

again unless there is better bonding this time... since it is so warm right now, that is possible. Otherwise, this heavy, wet snow that's falling is just going to weigh the weak snowpack more.

yah, i was just there looking at those pics, pretty incredible damage.

it is amazing that 4 patrollers were buried to some degree and all are ok. that is great to hear, especially lately.

scary stuff. i am so glad im in targhee today. we actually had some sun in the afternoon. any word on if/when the mountain will reopen? what kind of snow is left?

"The strong winds drove the available snow into large drifts in lee

areas. Patrollers at the Jackson Hole Resort were able to trigger slabs

to eleven feet in depth in areas that had already slid several times

this season. The avalanches were triggered with large explosive charges

and the depth and width of the slides was extensive."

HOLY SHIT. 11 foot crown depth?

Re-opened today.
Snow's probably fine as its still snowing and scheduled to snow through friday.

shitty year out west for inbounds slides...i heard from a friend that someone died in the slide, glad to hear that was a false rumor
