Heey im looking to upgrade to a semi pro camcorder for making high

quality ski videos. budget for cam is fairly big but basically 5 grand

is too much.

Have been looking at the:

JVC GY-HM100E
http://www.jvc.com.au/professional/professional-cameras/pro-hd-cameras/gy-hm100e

and the

Sony HXRMC50E
http://www.sony.com.au/product/hxr-mc50e

Both these are small and powerful and have had good reviews on them.

anyone has experience with using semi pro/ pro camcorders and has any

advice before buying a serious camera or anything else to consider..

please comment.

or if there are any other products i should be looking at for ski filming

Well as of right now, no moderators are online, so I suggest when you see one is online, PM him a link to this thread and ask to have it moved to Media & Arts. You'll get a much better response there from a ton of different people who will have a lot of experience with any camera and technical questions.

Didn't you already have another thread? and both of those cameras are crap, what is your budget?

yeh i made an old thread then made one in media and arts.. but anyway

budget is pretty much 5 grand.. would like to stay under that mark but if there is a product with amazing value for money then tell me more

Holy shit thats a big budget.. I don't know a lot a ton about video cameras but there are a few people on here sell HVX200 setups for a little over 2 grand.

https://www.newschoolers.com/ns/forums/readthread/thread_id/628737/

You could buy that setup plus and some really nice support such as a satchler tripod and a stedicam or one of the higher end glidecams.

Or if you could get a really nice dslr setup with some super nice glass and support.

yea, it's only $2100 for the HVX200A, battery and charger, 2x 16gb P2 cards, two camera bags, a backup battery and charger, remote, UV filter, and manuals. originally that package was around a $7500 value.

Seeing you 2 are both obv on your 2nd or 3rd semi pro cam.. could you give advice on what i should be looking for in a semi pro cam. I may be interested in your deals eventually but not until i know what i want... so i understand the HPX 170 is pretty much the newer version of the 200 but with no tape. At first i was looking at the JVC GYHM100 but now after reading reviews i see that for good performance in low light the 1/3" sensors are a must.

I am on a quest for knowledge.. then comes the cam

There are a ton of options when it comes to "semi pro" cameras. You basically have two options, video camera or hddslr camera.

For video cameras in the 5000 range, i would check out the hpx170/hvx200 or the hmc150. All three of those cameras are amazing. You can save like 1-2 grand by buying them used and since they don't use tapes, they work the same used as they do when they're brand new. My hvx has about 1000 hrs on it and i bought it will 500 hrs and it performs the exact same.

Other options could be the canon xf105, its about 4 grand brand new and just came out in the past year. Also, the sony ex1 could be found for decently cheap now too.

Do some research, figure out whats best. Honestly, i'd say snag a used hvx (mines 2500 with two batts, 32gb p2 card and .6x wide angle) or a used hmc150 (if you want to do sd cards instead of p2) and then you have 2500ish to buy a nice tripod, glide cam and maybe a 35mm adapter if you want to go that route (which im also selling :) )

Another option is hddslrs. You could get a really nice setup with 5 grand. You could get something like a 7D/60D/t2i (at your budget id get the 7D cause of the body) and then you could buy like 3-4 really nice lenses, a tripod and glide cam. You could also get some other kind of shoulder mount rig or something if you wanted, with 5 grand you can do alot with a hddslr.

Thats my two cents. choosing between hddslr and video cameras can be tough, but IMO if you want a video camera and have a large budget like you, id buy a real video camera.

Also, you made a post about the af100. Id say pass on that. the body will pretty much max out your budget and then you need lenses, support, mics, etc.

meh, if you're lucky. For a good setup, you'd need at least 2000 for lenses, IMO. Just the 14-140 kit wil not be enough and that lens is 900 bucks.

Cheers eheath. yeh i have been doing alot of searching on the net and i really P2 panasonic cams so the 170 looks really nice at this stage.

What are a list of things you would you regard as standard gear and accessories (tripods and wide angle lens) for a cam like the 170?

Also what is this glide cam? can you use it for camcorders or just with dslr? sounds cool

help so far has been great. keep comments coming

a glidecam is basicly a rig that stabalizes your shots, you balance it out and if done properly, you could run with it, yet the footy would not shake at all.

it basicly makes your shots very smooth, there expensive tho, but worth it.

it works with any camera, dslr, and camcorder.

If your budget is so big then make sure you get a nice tripod. Look into sachtlers. Honestly theres no point to get a glidecam unless you do follow cams for days. also look into the new wave of panasonic cameras that are coming out this fall

Ive heard the new models of panasonic P2 cameras are coming out v soon..

does anyone have a link to info/official web page?

birthday on friday.. buying cam v soon :D

i'd stick with either an used hvx200 or hpx170. Basically the same cameras for way less than brand new.

Ehh, he won't have enough for the hpx250 which kills the 170/200 in sharpness because it actually shoots true 1080p(full raster) and has avc intra with the 4:2:2 color space, but he won't have enough for the 250 or 160 so i'd honestly go for the ac130, full raster again, has the same sensor as the 370, and it has a 21x zoom lens which would be really fucking nice, just no 4:2:2 or hd-sdi out, and it records to sdhc cards instead of p2 cards, and the that is going to be 4 grand roughly then spend the rest on sd cards, batteries, and a NICE sachtler tripod

Was able to check out a demo model of the 170 in my home town Adelaide (AUS) and really liked what i saw. really liking the panasonic product. felt very natural when going through the control settings ( the view finder was kinda shit.. comment?)

Problem is in adelaide imported goods are really expensive atm because of the strength of our dollar.. so im considering waiting until im in vancouver (in a few weeks) or even until i am in LA (start of september) as it will be much cheaper buying new product.

I have also heard more good things about the new P2 line coming out this fall. prob wont have the budget for the 250 but if the 160 and 130 are actually smaller in size than the 170 and gives a higher quality image.. then I'm waiting for that!

Can anyone give a good review on the new products coming out compared to the 170?

Cheers heaps for help so far also. this is a really fun project. Me and my best mates are road trippin in an RV from West coast to East coast (USA) and back (CAN) and i hope to immortalise that trip with this camera :)
