Hating on new wave

I really didn’t appreciate the new wave until i saw magnus absolutely killing it. i think that the reason people hate on the new wave is because of the challenge level of the tricks, or at least thats why i did. i honestly just saw tricks that really didn’t seem impressive or interesting to me. it really all changed when i saw people like magnus doing tricks that had me amazed, and entertained, but that were also extremely unique and creative. i slowly started to change my mind. now that i see all that it stands for, i really hope that people can understand or at least respect the new wave for what it is. a new wave, a new movement in skiing. 🔥

The “New Wave is to Skiing what hipsters are to America”.

With that being said, some hipsters manage to actually be cool. ...same applies to New Wave.

I forget the prior NS posting about this current discussion, but it was spot on. It Talked about how little risk this “New Wave” actually accepts while progressing.... (hint: little to none). In reality they aren’t progressing, they just slide a lot more. All good, to each their own.

PS. Anyone who says Tupac sucks needs to learn to ski, AND learn what music is. Not even a rap fan!

Who cares? You know what's worse than hating? Not having an opinion and being a millennial safe space bitch who's too afraid to offend somebody by having one. I don't think any of the so called new wave skiers care if you hate their style or not and, if they do, they shouldn't. Nobody should. Go skiing and have fun, be free; but acknowledge that this includes the freedom to not like things.

Let's put it this way: doing anything solely to conform to a style is lame. In fact, that's seemingly the opposite of why freestyle and newschool skiing came about. Do it cause you love it, whether it's track pants or basket ball jerseys, or do it cause you simply don't care. Don't do it to conform. I think people are hating on kids just trying to conform to something. That would be the issue I take with all this, which is not with new wave itself but the following it's garnered.

the new wave is like dancing and its dope when its done right...my only beef with it is how people loose there shit for certain tricks that just aren't technical or ballsy...yeah it's creative but sometimes its sloppy

im all about it though cuz its way fun to ski with you hands all jazzed up waving about and whatnot

Recently I wrote a piece on new wave and MY thoughts on it. It was not against new wave at all. I dig all the creativity in the tricks, and frankly lowkey like the new wave, that piece was just information to consider. My view has changed on new wave a lot since I first saw it.

I loved The Bunch the first time i saw them, but it took some time to really like wabs and A40.

So I'm reading this thread and I'm still not understanding what New Wave is. Am I old? Out of touch? Someone please explain?

I don't hate on it necessarily, but I just don't find new wave visually appealing. The mitten hands floating around mid-air just looks weird to me. When you add that to swiveling hips, it reminds me of jazz hands or prancercizing. Let's face it, New Wave is just prancerizing around on skis. It's not too dissimilar to ski ballet.

But as long as you are having fun on skis, go for it. Just don't expect everyone to find it visually appealing.

Perhaps a little bit off topic but; wow. Is the general impression of Magnus that ‘it looks like nothing is really going through his head’ like the starter of this thread is saying? If so I am going to take that as a reminder not to judge someone I don’t know.

i did mean that he looks kinda careless. i've loved him since day 1. bought his skis for a reason.

Ski how you want...Shane McConkey- “What we were doing was free from skiing, free of rules and most any kind of boundaries. Whether it was steep, extreme descents or new freestyle what we were doing was freeskiing, free to ski our own style on our own terms”.

I would ski in sweatpants and new wave style gear before it was even a hit, this was back in 2014. I’ll still wear just sweats too if it is hot out like I did all summer at T line.

I was never able to afford new reliable outerwear.. I had one pair of pants and 1 jacket. My pants got a hole in them so I just started wearing my Nike and Adidas sweats while layering up. Now I finally have a lot of good and reliable gear most I got for free from companies and others I scored a good deal on at Goodwill. I wear my new gear all the time as a reminder to myself of my come up.

One thing skiing in sweats before it was “cool” has taught me is that.. I let my clothes be the least defining aspect of my skiing. When i’m on the hill I’m never one of those “look at me and my fresh gear” dudes.. I let my skiing do the talking. I say.. wear whatever you feel comfortable in, trust me when you feel comfortable you will be more confident, and have an overall greater experience. You can focus more on skiing than looking good.

Hardo alert
