Has Skiing Become Too Much of a Fashion Contest

In a sport that has become chronically ‘online’, like everything else, there is a greater pressure to appeal to the masses. In every aspect of our lives, we want to feel socially accepted, Maslow's hierarchy yada yada. I think skiing has always had that show off for others factor not in an unhealthy way but because it's part of the fun. It’s fun to make edits and post them on Newschoolers, it's fun to send your clips to friends and family, or even making short cuts on IG because you’re proud of your skiing and you should want to share it. I think the introduction of social media, despite all the negative effects, has added a more competitive aspect to the sport that can be looked at as fun or daunting. By competitive I don’t exclusively mean tricks but everything else that comes in an edit. The music, the outfits, the filming, the effects. There is so much pressure these days on fitting in and ‘being cool’ especially on the younger generation and it’s evident in skiing.

So, is skiing too much of a fashion contest?

We are seeing a golden era in small brands, home brands, core brands. And it’s allowing us to be more creative with our kits. Some of us pull up to the hill with basic snow pants and a winter jacket; some of us pull up in jeans and a vest and a studded belt with motocross gloves and headphones tied around the head with a shoelace lmao. Neither is wrong though, and let me preface this by saying I totally like to make kits I think are cool and it is important to me.

As someone who has never competed in skiing, not even a rail jam, I don’t really look at it as a sport. To me it is an art, an outlet for self-expression, and an all-around fun, teaching, and rewarding hobby. I love everything about skiing ‘media’. Choosing the music, the tasteful tricks, film angles, and of course, the outfits. I think it’s important to focus on those other pieces because it adds uniqueness and individuality.

But is there a limit? At what point does it become ‘unhealthy’ to care about what you look like on hill. I think we may already be there, myself included. And while I may not be the standard for that healthy balance, some of us are pulling up to the mountain in some questionable outfits. So where do we draw the line? Because I feel like an increasing part of the community is more focused on how we look rather than the tricks and the skiing itself (content wise).

Thoughts? Opinions? Do you agree? Am I overdramatic? Do I need to start making plug edits wearing as much camo and vintage clothing as I can find?

Yes ,

To me lot of this IG skiing culture seems pretentious, I feel like lot of people buy stuff just to fit in, Same way as Patrick Bateman just wants to fit in. People have things because you are "supposed" to have them. You know, gotta have pants from this brand and this brand, gotta have this arc jacket. I'm bit of a hypocrite because I have same pants everyone and the arc jacket, but you might get the point. I also think this culture thrives more in NA than here, or at least trough IG it seems like it.

It becomes unhealthy quite quickly. It's unhealthy when you have to think about how you look and what people think about you all the time. From the shopping part to skiing in the clothing you bought to posting your clips. This is not exclusive to skiing, You can see the same effect everywhere. Like year ago everyone had to have Dunks and now they have to have Sambas to not feel left out. Lot of it comes from social media. Social media makes people (especially young people) compare themselves to other people easily, This can lower self-esteem and causes people to fixate more about how they look. It drains the fun out of skiing when you feel like having to be something just to fit in even though that would be something you wouldn't want to do or wear. It is tiring, causes depression and anxiety in the long run. I think same applies to certain tricks. You have to do certain tricks to stay cool and valid.

Easy fix is to peel out of Social media. People are nicer when you meet them in real life.

the courage to be disliked is a good thing in skiing too.

Skiing is always a fashion show. For all styles! I admire something in all of them. 2024 was 100% Year of the Poser tho, and boy did they pull up last season. All categories were infiltrated, not even just park! Fingers crossed last seasons lack of snow and high prices keep them contained to their indoor pickleball courts this winter

I had to use something as an example so your skibidi toilet brain would understand it gangily.

I wouldn’t say it’s become a fashion contest since clothing has always been an important key to one’s style I guess but it’s definitely become a circle jerk around certain (and hideous) stylistic choices like the bright goggles over the helmet or mfs wearing gardening gloves just because they saw a couple “cool” guys do it first.

TLDR too many mfs going out of their way to fucking copy and dickride a trend and it’s so lame lol. Just go fuckin ski and have fun.

I've long held the belief that if you find yourself getting poetic about skiing, you've missed the point. It's just skiing, and the best skier on the mountain is the one who's having the most fun, most consistently

A 100% it is. You can see it with everybody rocking this dumb parachute cinched ankle garbage pants. Especially the Midwest/East coast kids. These 2xl paper thin ankle gripping lunch bag looking pants are the norm and they will soak through if you’re sitting down for more than 30 seconds. All just to get some support from ur friends who sit in the park all day and still can’t do any unique tricks. If you want some actual pants go buy some ski pants second hand in a xl/2xl and they’ll actually be stacked and have a 10k waterproof rating minimum. It’s not js the pants either. So yeah. Where what works for you, not what everybody and their mother is buying to be core.

tldr; yeah shits wack

It’s definitely become more of a follow the leader in the looks department. When you have nearly everyone in the park wearing the exact same things or looking like a group who purposely all wanted to match each other clearly they’re following the current trend. I like bright ass colors. Always have always will. Get plenty of hate here about and don’t give a fuck. I’ll keep wearing what I like. I definitely stick out on the mountain as I don’t wear what everyone else is wearing. Most common comment I get is “wow you’re really bright, won’t miss you on the slopes”. I really don’t understand the massive baggy pants and jackets looking like Oompa Loompa mf’s

ofc the middle aged man has no sense of fashion.

But for real your attitude towards clothing is what we need. More variety instead of copy paste.

You don't have actual steeze if you can't make your skiing look good in whatever clothing.

I will 100% admit i do not understand this fashion trend at all. Cool you enjoy wearing trash bags.

It's freestyle. Style is in the name, and will always be a part of the sport. I think the issue is consumerism and fomo and stuff like that. People buying brands to say/show that they wear those brands and are "cool". There's also a lot of rich people in skiing and they just buy shit all the time. Like there's a guy that comes into the shop I'm at almost every year and just straight up asks what's new and cool then buys it on the spot. Generally speaking guys like that are more concerned with look than function. Then they show off on socials and boom, we get to where we are now.

Different strokes for different folks, do whatever makes you feel best on the mountain even if that means being freezing and wet game is game

I like this sailor guys outfit.

The thing is if you don't care about certain aspects of skiing, you'll probably end up enjoying more. I've has phases these past 2 winters where how i skied or how i looked really bummed me out, as to when i was younger i wouldn't really care about that stuff. Skiing is supposed to be fun, but all the stuff that is important and really makes a difference of how you look when you film, is the kind of thing that can really suck the fun out of skiing imo.

Skiing is a circus but it has also literally always been a circus, it's honestly less of a fashion show these days than back in the day

Hang out in Aspen and have you mind blown.

I have a buddy that just got really into skiing and is so clueless he's actually gone full circle into awesome. He rocks blue collar work clothes unironically by default, but dropped several hundred on a chrome finish full-face Ruroc. At first I wanted to say something to him about the helmet but just didn't have the heart. But now I'm like you fuckin rock that ruroc king.

it has not become too much of a fashion contest, it has always been a fashion contest.

I will say people new to the sport seem to figure out the fashion thing sooner now than in the past.

its a look at me sport so yeah people have always been making it a fashion show. even before the ‘blizzard of aahhhs’ that is older than me. company's create and hop on trends to make money so i think it will continue to be a fashion show forever

It’s always been there. Difference is, when I was younger, I didn’t noticed because I was way more impressionable.

Now I’m more likely to be like “wtf is that?? I ain’t wearing that”

The more outrageous the more I see they are compensating for their lack of skill. Let your skiing do the talking. It's like how I avoid the dads who wear those cringe looking visor race-helmet things but can only pizza-turn on the bunny slope. In all honesty, black jacket on black pants that are baggy are always going to be stylish.

BTW, I blame Shaun White for starting all this bullshit with his skinny jeans emo-look from back in the day.

If you base it off of your own preferences and don’t spend all day dwelling about how others think of your kit I don’t think there’s a problem.

99% of skiers objectively dress like shit, *on and off hill* so if it’s a “fashion contest” none of yall in 1st place. Everyone just trying to dress like 2003 high school bully, or Anthony soprano junior, shit is so corny.

catch me ricked up making all yall look like bums this summer. I ain’t even broke out the fall pieces yet. Keep yah girl inside this October.

Good comparison but I would add that Bateman obsessively feels like he has to outdo all the people he hangs out with. That's they key issue here. Yeah self expression and whatever but people are going beyond that. Trying to be cool or fit in isn't new by any means, but people are wearing shit specifically for their ig clips that they wouldn't wear otherwise.

It's always been one as others have already stated. I think social media has just amplified it and has made it more accessible for others to see what everyone else is wearing and to allow others to compare and judge.

Skiing is all about the individual and who cares what they look like. As long as they are having fun with family and friends, thats all that matters because, that is all I am doing.

I'm also in the camp that it's actually less fashion oriented than it used to be. People literally used to post threads on here just posting their kit and soliciting advice/feedback. Or how about the TWall FullTilt boot covers that had no purpose other than just for the way they looked.

Looking cool/having style is for sure still part of the game, but it seems like kids today are doing in a more DIY/thrift way which I think is way cooler and more unique than buying a specific piece of gear from one of the handful of companies that were deemed "cool" back in the early 2000s and 2010s.

That "greater pressure to appeal to the masses" is on you bro. Its pretty easy to get caught up in the trend riding sheep crowd

I think it comes down to the individual as far as giving a fuck. You can dress however you want, its the mf that gives a shit that is the problem. I hear what you are saying but to me these opinions are a bit childish and femmenie on either end of it.

Gardening gloves are perfect for spring skiing

My plan was to wear a different outfit everyday of the season, but there were a few I liked too much and had to repeat

I think it only looks good on snowboarders but that’s just me.

no gloves is superior when it’s warm. Easy to play/pause/skip your music, easier to grab, easier to film on a camera or iPhone, easier to crack a beer, the list goes on.

I will be heavy on the no glove propaganda until I die.

I’ll be the first to admit I absolutely love no gloves feeling wise, but my hand sweats so much they end up freezing so fast when I’m not wearing gloves. Then I put gloves on I sweat even more take them off to get some air and my hands are starting to freeze right away. It’s a no-win situation for me so I just keep the gloves and sweat.

the connector straps that come with some gloves are so damn nice. Easy to let those johns breathe on the chair without having to sit on them or worry about dropping/forgetting them.

I always have to wear gloves but thats more a rope tow thing. Still I see some people in MN that rip no gloves on the rope in the spring. It works if youre always cruising and getting on the rope at speed, but if not it seems kinda cooked. Ive gotten rope burn getting on without gloves when I dont have speed cuz Im filming someone and it sucks so hard

skaters typically aren’t running the risk of frostbite lol

You’re not wrong. I ride in Pennsylvania mainly and it doesn’t ever get cold enough for that haha. But that being said I’ve taken a good number of rope tow laps in the teens with heavy snow and as long as I keep moving I don’t mind it. I also have freakish circulation to my hands so that could be it lol.

Good thing I’m not good enough to pull a lead mute because I don’t hit jumps ? in all seriousness though if you got dulled edges or whatever it’s so nice to grab and hold.
