Has anyone volunteered abroad?

me and a few kids wanted to go to some foreign country to volunteer and whatnot. one of my buddies went to costa rica last year for 3 weeks and helped build shit and whatnot and said it was awesome. has anyone done anything like this? we found something where we'd go to thailand for 4 weeks, but the company had poor reviews. we're looking to scuba dive at some point throughout the trip as well (volunteering usually entails some work during the week and lots of free time haha. go figure). if anyone has an info that would be great.
