Has Anyone Done an Internship at a Ski Company?

Has anyone done an internship at a ski company (maybe ON3P)? What was it like and did you get a set of skis at the end?

I interned with IFSA and designed a pair of top sheets that were given away to young rippers. The vibes were chill in meetings and one of my coworkers was a girl on my ski team at the time.

Interned at LINE for a summer.

Got a pair of skis, a jump start on my design career, and addicted to mt hood.

I emailed Gilson about a potential internship but they never got back to me. I would love to do it though

Did one for Majesty Skis a few years ago, all the people there were chill as fuck and I got a pair of skis instead of payment. If you’re just looking to do an internship to get free skis you should probably look into a different industry. If you’re genuinely interested in ski design, or marketing/sales then you can definitely get some good experience.

Haha, I am actually interested in this industry with ski building. It’d just be nice to get a set at the end, especially because most skis now days are high budget.

Yeah most companies will opt to give you a pair rather than paying you, but again that’s not why you should be doing it ?‍♂️

Probably gonna be an unpopular opinion on NS, but you got fucking scammed.

How do you mean?

I don't know your exact situations so I'll make some assumptions. Let's assume a standard 3 month, 12 week, summer internship. For full time at federal minimum wage this would be $3,480 pretax. For part time 20 hours a week that's $1,740. Majesty skis have a price range of mid $500 at the lowest to about $1000 at the highest. The cost of manufacturing on that is way less. In my personal opinion, you sold your labor short in a dying industry. However, if it's your dream to do ski design more power to you, but compensation being only skis is bogus.

You're lucky if you even get paid for the internship especially in the ski industry. If you're doing one in the first place you prolly don't care about the money, just looking for experience and get some connections

I mean I see where you’re coming from definitely. That being said, I was freshman in college and applied thinking I wouldn’t really get the internship anyway. I mostly helped them with social media and stuff like that anyway, and it definitely wasn’t full time either. I did a little bit of work, met some cool people, and got some sticks ?‍♂️ It mostly involved posting on their Instagram and answering the occasional question on NewSchoolers

I've applied for jobs at ON3P for the past 7 years and havent heard back either dont feel bad

Yeah man wouldn't take it personally. Outside of that Covid shut us down/cut production for much of spring and summer, there is no HR person here and at most small companies (pretty sure we have an autoresponse set up to the career app that says as such too). No one on other end unless we're actively interview & hiring - and I promise we're smaller than you think. I don't know how other brands do it, but our careers email is essentially an intake database and it gets flooded.

It is impossible to know when someone might quit or get hurt and be unable to work, so it stays open (with local job board support if we're actively hiring).

We used to have more internship opportunities (which varied widely) but it isn't super practical in a production sense as we've grown and expect the same daily output year round. Now we only do them in rare instances.

For us, since jobs are almost all production focused, hiring always starts locally just incase the skill or physical nature of the job doesn't work out, which is frankly pretty high. Just don't want people moving here and the having to let them go after a few weeks.

Will say that I suspect a lot of internship stuff is on hold with Covid right now - as interns tend to take more management and businesses are (without staying it) trying to limit Covid exposure - sorry young people - but hopefully by Fall life is really on the path towards normality and more opportunities are opening up.

Did an internship with Faction about 5 years back. Was in London so I had to sleep on a mate’s sofa as the wage wouldn’t have covered rent. But was easily the best 12 weeks I’ve ever worked, I spent one day just budgeting for travel in the Finland seg in This Is Home and scoping street spots on google maps. I got enough money out of it to pretty much cover food / transport and got a free pair of CT2s, pants, jacket, poles and some pivots for £60. Was definitely a sick opportunity, especially given opportunities to work in the ski industry in the UK are pretty rare for obvious reasons.

You're assuming the work he did was worth paying someone minimum wage to do. Most small business with interns do it because they need help with small odd jobs, ie this TV station i worked at had interns come in during live shows and help run cameras, turn the mics, up, etc cause the station only employed one person to run the show, its all they could afford.

I think you're underestimating how many ppl out there will work for basically nothing to get experience, I did it for years, you have to work for nothing sometimes ?‍♀️

I’m so curious about your spots. According to the intro, you filmed in the town I’m in now. I only recognize one spot - the scene at the factory made of bricks.

Hinterland has some really cool skis. I would jump on that OP.

Hit up Hinterland Skis. You'll leave with some skis but Im going to make you make them yourself.

Also, OP I did a ski internship locally in Tahoe for a small company called Slant. I just emailed the owner one day. I helped out with stuff like cutting cores on the CNC, sidewalls, final touches, packaging skis, a little social media, events, etc. I really enjoyed it. The owner does some really cool stuff with skis and I love the skis. Just wish they had better exposure. I, also, got a pair of skis which was nice because I just wanted the exposure. I was at a stage where I could afford to work for free For experience so I took advantage of it.

I interned with Newschoolers 7 years ago and all I got was a lousy red name & a hangover on Mr. Bishop's dime a year later.

Circling back because you need to at least email [tag=8438]@creighton[/tag] about hinterland internship. I would be so stoked about a hinterland internship.

lol this.

Im in my final semester of my MPH and it took me months just to find an unpaid internship. I think one person in my cohort got a paid internship (50ish people). and that is a super in demand industry right now. Skiing would be much harder I would imagine.

Thanks! I’m currently trying to figure out a plan for the coming months/year but this is definitely an awesome opportunity.
